Heritage of the USA Part II
By Rev. Katherine Appello
The founding father, while not seeking to create a Theocracy, such as you have in Islamic nations, were very clear in that the Gospel influencing all they were about and our government, how it was shaped, formed so on and so forth. Do you realize that 60% of their conclusions on politics so on and so forth were based on the bible, maybe even more? Does that mean they were perfect or had a perfect theology, no. It does mean we must understand what kind of a nation we are to encourage, honor etcÉ. to be true to our heritage.
Even before this nation was formed, faith was a major part of this country, the Judeo-Christian faith. It begins with the Mayflower Compact, a document that was created by the first settlers. In researching, we learn that The Compact was the document first to govern the colonists, later known as the pilgrims and their goal was to practice the Christian faith, with it having governance over every aspect of their lives and sola scriptura. This is a piece from the Compact itself:
ÒIn the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.
Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. Ò
Then we have the Declaration of Independence, which tells us all rights come from God, not government and canÕt be usurped by the government. The U.S. Constitution we are told has no reference to God or anything like that, but that is not true. At the bottom you will see it is signed in the year of our Lord. In addition, all 50 state Constitutions reference God, so to them God was the head of the government, not man. The Continental-Confederation Congress, a legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, had a good number of very religious men. The energy spent by Congress to encourage the practice of religion in the new nation went way beyond that expected. The citizens understood how important it was to have Godly men governing, so they did not object
You see, anyone who would dispute this is quite frankly ignorant, as 25 of the 27 founders had seminary degrees. Even a stained glass replica of a painting of the first Continental Congress in 1774 depicts the entire congress in fervent prayer. Let us not forget that Congress printed and distributed bibles, and on October 18th 1780 Congress put out an official proclamation to speak the Gospel all over the earth, so any ÒWallÓ talk is frankly, ignorance. The first government was very much about God and national covenants and they understood that when nations abandon God, they risk destruction, degradation and all kinds of bad stuff. Were they perfect people, no, but they understood that God must not every be taken out of the public square.
Thomas Jefferson, Faith and ÒWallÓ
You will also get people citing Jefferson in regards to abolishing faith so on and so forth in the public square, as well as the ignorance of Church and State Wall and Separation, which is bull.
Atheists and others love to use Jefferson as a point of saying Òno public faith, or traces of it!!!Ó They will use the phrase ÒWall of SeparationÓ and frankly they donÕt know squat. LetÕs address this. First, I will discuss how the whole thing came about with Jefferson and the letter that got atheists and others anti-God and anti-Christ try to use to their advantage.
The letter Jefferson wrote was in reference to a concern by someone that the government would interfere with the free speech of the church, or try to take freedom away from the church in public or private worship. Jefferson makes it clear that the government will not take away any religious freedom, private or public, that the government will allow and even encourage full religious expression of the Judeo-Christian faith. In addition, the early Presidents and the founders used government property and resources to promote the Judeo-Christian faith in all spheres of life and to all.
This wall never existed, and it was only later on that society mucked it all up and tried to take God out of the public square. When you tell citizens of a nation, this nation, that they can not publicly have displays of their Judeo-Christian heritage, you violate the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and much much more.
