Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men. (NIV)

There is nothing worse than restless nights, and my wife and I both were getting tired of them.

Having recently purchased a new mattress, we were upset when three months later we were doing the same thing we had done on the old mattress: rolling into the middle. To top it off, we were sleeping on an antique bed frame which had no means of securing the mattress. So we twisted, bounced, slid and woke every morning feeling exhausted.

Days can be restless too. We go to school and hate it. We graduate, go to work and aren’t satisfied there either. Maybe we are working outside our field of training or perhaps the boss is a jerk. We can get restless at church and when we’re doing charitable work. And sometimes we even get restless doing what we enjoy.

Then I read this verse. Wait a minute. Seems like it’s normal for me to be restless. And it is because God has placed eternity in my heart. I’ll never be completely satisfied on earth. Even the richest man on earth wasn’t.

I enjoy earthly stuff, but down inside I know there’s more to life. I watch my earthly treasures deteriorate, rust and break down, and I realize my body will do the same thing. Regardless of how diligently I try to make it last, the wrinkles will appear, the joints will ache and the vital organs will wear out. So I yearn for things and a body that won’t. Not because I’m selfish but because God created the yearning in me.

God gave a glimpse of a perfect world in the Garden of Eden, but humanity quickly damaged it through disobedience. In spite of our failures, we have eternal value. God has created us to live with him, and we’ll never be satisfied until we do.

Restlessness is part of life. Living by faith in what we can’t see but know exists and working for God will help temporarily satisfy our restlessness until eternity becomes reality.

Prayer: Eternal Spirit of God, when our souls become restless beyond measure, calm us with Your peace that surpasses our understanding. www.lovelinesfromgod.com
