Faith
Our parents teach us to make decisions on our own. They encourage us to make goals and achieve them. So we are trained to have a plan and expect that plan to work. That is how life works. We have a plan and move forward. And we feel secure that our plans will work.
And then the unexpected happens. For you the unexpected likely looks different than my unexpected. I didn’t expect to work in one state while my husband worked in another. I never dreamed a commuter marriage was our future. He didn’t either. But here we are. Waiting. Wondering. Surrendering.
Learning to depend on God and trust in His faithfulness is often the result of a field trip that feels like a blind date. Awkward, scary, and checking the room for every possible exit.
Jennifer Kennedy Dean addresses this in chapter 4 of Live a Praying Life: Open Your Life to God’s Power and Provision(my new favorite book on prayer). In the workbook, she recommends a great exercise in releasing our big picture plan – our will – and surrendering to God’s will.
Write out in detail your will for a situation facing you.
Write out definite instructions for God about how you think He should handle it.
Write across it in red ink, “Surrendered to the Father. Do Your will in Your way at Your time.”
Then pray: Father, here is my will. You know that I have a will and expectations in every matter, but I choose to lay my will down and not settle for anything less than Your wonderful will. I trust Your love for me and Your wisdom in this situation.
WOW! And why not! Why wouldn’t we surrender our “one man plus one woman plan” to the one who spoke the world into being, the one who created life, the one who owns life after death.
Have you surrendered to God a big plan of your own? I would love to hear how God provided for you and strengthened your faith.
