Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday August 25, 2011
Some of the old time preachers possessed wisdom that younger and some currently older preachers, politicians and other partially insane men and women should desire. Solomon said, "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." Proverbs 4:7.
Commenting on this principle Bishop J.C. Ryle said, "There are good men who have more zeal than discretion, and even help the enemy of truth by unreasonable acts and words."
Knowing when to speak up and when to remain quiet and let an event slide does require an enormous amount of wisdom and control of the heart. I purposely did not mention the tongue as this little part must be under the restraint of a heart and mind that is the full surrender mode to the Lord Jesus and His word. Our Lord stated this truth thusly:
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45.
The the tongue is as Al Ray said, "The dipstick of the heart." By paying attention to what comes out of the mouth, we are bearing witness to the condition of our spiritual condition. Whether we are wearing a suit and tie or the latest grunge fashion the tongue is a more accurate indicator of what is going on inside.
I know many and know of many more, godly men, but men who are feared due to the fact that they "made their bones" by using their tongue and pen as an oral machine gun of destruction against any and all with whom they find disagreement on the tiniest of issues. The devil is having a field day as such evil speaking abounds in many religious groups.
Thirty seven years ago a man who wrote articles for the National Inquirer befriended me and helped the church I pastored briefly. He saw a pile of religious newspapers on my desk and asked for permission to browse. I granted his request. After a few minutes he said to me, with a slightly sad tone, "Larry, our paper could learn a lot from these guys."
Please don't be foolish enough to think he was paying slime spreaders a compliment. He was actually shocked as he held evidence before his eyes that bore witness to lower level journalistic techniques. May God help us.
"There are good men who have more zeal than discretion, and even help the enemy of truth by unreasonable acts and words." J.C. Ryle
