I have a friend, she is amazing, when I think of her she is jumping up and down with pom poms in her hand, I don't quite know what she is saying but I know that she is cheering for me. She is my own personal cheerleader. She celebrates with me, even the most minor achievements, she encourages me to push doors to see if my dreams are on the other side and she makes me feel like I can achieve anything. She has me totally convinced that she enjoys my company (even when all i can talk about is a fascinating little subject called "Me") and is almost as excited about my future as I am.
We all need cheerleaders, friends that love us, even beyond our own comprehension. Cheerleaders are not restricted by the limitations you put on yourself, they see beyond the insecurities that often hold us back, they see our potential and magnify it. That's why I love spending time with my cheerleaders.
Somewhere a little further along the friendship spectrum is another companion, Little Miss Toxic, I think we have all met her at some point. Far from celebrating your achievements, she pours water on your bonfire at every available opportunity, that is if you get so far as to talk about you. She can't stand it when good things come to you and seems to think her mission in life is to keep you in your place. You tell her about a promotion at work, she tells you that your shoes don't match your outfit, you mention that someone asked you on a date, she reminds you of the previous three men that didn't, and on it goes. There are many roots to this behaviour; bitterness, insecurity, jealousy , the problem is that you end up standing in the shade of the tree that these roots produce. Maybe you stay in the friendship because you pity her, you think you can change and soften her. Perhaps she manipulates you and brings out her trump card, emotional blackmail. It's not easy to get away from Miss Toxic, she can turn on the charm when required, makes you feel needed (gives the ego a bit of a boost) and there is that little piece of us that is holding out for her approval. I knew Miss Toxic once, she kept me small, insecure and hidden and for a time I became just like her, but deep down that's not who I wanted to be.
I want to be a cheerleader, I admit that it is much easier to have cheerleaders than be one yourself, for some people it seems to come naturally but for some of us we have to put in a little more work. I love when my friends have something to celebrate but I often have to ignore the pangs of jealousy that still like to goad me and I am occasionally guilty of quickly assessing how their good news will affect me before I get too excited for them, but I am getting there!
Friendships are one of the most important and enduring things you will ever build, choose them wisely and don't be afraid to give back more than you receive, in fact I dare you to go get those pom poms out, dust them down and get your cheer on today!

I really liked this, Justine. God bless the cheerleaders in our lives. My mother is definitely my greatest cheerleader. I also liked the relational way you communicated this. That's a big plus with inspirational articles.
The only critique would be to do a little bit of work on some of the punctuation to make sure the sentences flow really well.
Other than that, this was a naturally refreshing read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have any way of making it to the FaithWriters' Conference next month, I'd really encourage you to do that. You're a writer I'd really like to cheer on.
