Dead Man’s Corner
There is a corner in my neighborhood that I have labeled "Dead Man's Corner". The corner is on a hill with about a 55 degree slope combined with a pretty sharp turn. Now for most of us, it would not be that difficult for us to navigate the corner on a bicycle. But for my four year old son, it has been treacherous. He has been petrified of the corner. When we approach it, he insists I hold onto the handle bars of his tricycle and help him navigate the corner. On one such occasion, we were not so successful. While trying to hold on to his baby sister's car and his handle bars at the same time, my grip slipped and he went tumbling.
Thankfully, he did not get hurt. But needless to say, he was neither happy with me nor interested in tackling the corner gain.
Well all of that changed last week. While we were taking a walk, Nehemiah was racing ahead of me and his sister. As we approached Dead Man's Corner, I expected him to slow down and wait for me to help him but he didn't. He kept going. He did not even look back. He just kept going and magnificently navigated the hill. He then turned to me and enthusiastically said "Daddy, I did it"!
I was impressed. I was impressed because he had physically conquered "Dead Man's Corner". I was more impressed that he had mentally conquered his fear of Dead Man's Corner.
All of us have faced a Dead Man's Corner that has provoked immense fear in our hearts at some point in our lives. We have failed to accomplish a goal and now the mere thought of trying again provokes mountains of fear in our hearts. We have been rejected by someone or some organization and now the mere thought of making ourselves vulnerable to that type of hurt again provokes mountains of fear. These mountains of fear have stifled our spiritual, relational and emotional growth. We are unable to go to the next level in our career because of fear. We are unable to have a deep personal intimate relationship with the Father or another person because of fear. We feel incomplete because we are unable to fulfill our God ordained destiny due to fear.
The Great Apostle Paul addressed the issue of fear with his timid apprentice Timothy. He said that the Father has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) Paul recognized the leadership ability that lied within Timothy. He also understood that fear was preventing Timothy from exercising his God given gift.
Like Timothy advised Paul, we cannot allow fear to dictate our actions. We are children of the Most High God. We are more than conquerors. We are overcomers. We all have been blessed with a gift that the Father desires to unleash for His glory. We cannot allow past failures to stop us. Like my son, we must get up and try again. If we fail, we must get up and try again.
Will it be easy? No! We will have to push our way through the emotional bruises. We will have to kick down barriers that we have erected to protect our hearts. We will have to ignore the nay sayers. We will have to resist the temptation to quit. But we can do it. There is success in each and every one of us. We just have to push through the negative barriers of life to achieve it. What if Michael Jordan had stopped playing basketball when he was cut from the team in the 9th grade? He would have never become the greatest basketball player of all time. What if Abraham Lincoln had quit politics when he failed to win the Illinois Senate race? He would have never become one of the greatest Presidents of all time.
Both of these great men had to face fear in order for them to accomplish their goal. However, they did not allow it to stop them. They punched fear in the nose and moved forward to accomplish their goals. What about you? Are you going to allow fear to stop you from succeeding? Are you going to allow fear to stop you from getting to the next level? Are you going to allow fear to stop you from chasing your dreams? Don't allow something that God has not given you to stop you from being what He has created you to be.
