Larry Lilly's Letter Monday May 23, 2011
As I glanced through the seldom read book of Ecclesiastes, I settled on a much used line from Solomon that is true as to depth, but mostly misunderstood at a glance. Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 1:9,
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Many things that are thought to be new are really a smaller version or even an unnoticed "something" that has always been around. This is especially true in the realm of human nature. The concept of the Intellect, or Enlightenment is not new but as old as time itself.
Any truth within the discipline of psychology or psychiatry did not originate or was actually discovered by Freud, but was evident in the scriptures since man first walked on Earth.
The "Fall of Man" encased in Adam reveals more about human nature in its inception than most unbelievers and even many believers want to accept. My long time and dear friend, Melvin Branham wrote:
"When Adam and Eve's eyes were opened, they and the race entered into the Mid-Night of Fear. For the first time they suffered from self-awareness, self-doubt, blame and shame among many other crippling hang-ups including fear."
Immediately after the creation God had pronounced it to be good and this pronouncement included the progenitor of the Human Race. There is no record of fear, eating of the fruit of the Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil came with the personal insecurities with which we live today. Your personal problem is not new under the sun; therefore there is liberation from it if you will accept God's word concerning it.
There is some argument about the nature of the "first human sin" but since there is no consensus among the theologs, I will venture mine as simply the failure to trust in the goodness of God toward His creation. Trust in what God had said, Satan's subtle denial notwithstanding, would have stopped his Garden attack in its tracks. Jesus demonstrated this truth in Matthew 4:1-11. The phrase "It is written" carries enough weight for we humans, fallen though we be, to overcome the temptations of life if we will but truly trust Jesus and rely of what He has said in the Word.
Saturday past many suffered the pangs of disappointment due to the ranting of some fool concerning the coming of Christ failed to come true. Had they trusted the written words of Jesus, they would not have been foolish enough to fall prey to the rants.
John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
