Larry Lilly's Letter Monday February 14, 2011
For years my friends called me an "overachiever" and by this they meant that I achieved more with my limited intelligence than I really should. It hurts to agree with them, but the truth be known, they were/are on target. Many necessary actions that must be performed for life to continue are said to be automatic, else I would be in a pickle. Such is life, DNA and the quality of Mom's breathing during my birth.
Because of my above described condition I have discovered and used unusual techniques over the years to advance along life's path. When I was a kid I found that having smart girl friends increased my grades, and during that time smarts meant more to me than the appearance of the fairer sex.
I have used a technique for years that helps my thinking while speaking on Radio, TV the telephone and now for years writing. I knew that I did better in these efforts while performing just a wee bit different than most. Imagine my surprise when I read the following several years ago.
"A USC study found that your brain's information processing speed increases 5 to 20 percent when you’re standing."
Perhaps this is why most proposals for marriage are made in a kneeling position.
When I first started this practice I remarked to one of our assistant pastors that I might look silly standing while working. He remarked that I looked silly in any position. After all these years this now old man is still assisting others.
The point in this is to find what works best for you. Most of us meekly accept the ways and means of others and struggle through life never quite hitting our stride. I am told the course of our life race mentioned in the Bible is one that God has laid out specifically for us and is therefore different than anyone else's. Running a course designed for someone else will lead to a slower pace, and when you have finished you will be disappointed at having ran the wrong course, perhaps in the wrong direction.
I told The Great Blonde early one morning when I was leaving for the East Coast that I thought I sounded better when singing at 20,000 feet than even in the shower. She comforted me with "I hope you only sing at 20,000 feet then."
I must fight a little arrogant pride when I remember reading that other great men such as Thomas Jefferson, Earnest Hemingway and Winston Churchill stood while doing serious work. Churchill had a few other outlandish peculiarities while working that I will leave alone as this is a Christian letter.
For me, thinking and processing information at 5 to 20 percent faster, in whatever position, is the position that I am going to opt for as I need all the percent I can muster in serving the Lord. I do think I choose better and more inspiring words when I am walking, but I simply cannot type while walking though the Lord knows I have tried.
Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
