KJV - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
NIV - Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Our Lord does not want us to go through each day just getting by. He wants us to live abundantly. He knows that worry, doubt, and fear are human features that rob us of our joy and limit our glorification of God. So, He tells His disciples, and us, as He knew His own death was approaching how we should view this life: A rich and glorious opportunity to unite with God forever, and use our time here to share with others the "peace" He leaves with us.
This is not the kind of peace that Hitler and Stalin agreed to while they planned to destroy each other. Nor is it the kind of peace we may seek in security. Oh, if we had more money in the bank, then we could rest. If all of our bills were paid off and we had enough food stored to feed ourselves for years, then we could relax. I can almost picture Peter feeling the haft of his sword for assurance as Jesus spoke. He may have thought, "Just in case things go wrong, I can slash and hack my way back to Bethsaida and my comfortable, established life as a fisherman."
God's peace last forever and there is no going back. The peace of the world is transient and conditional. The peace of God is eternal and unconditional. That is how great is God's love for us. The peace of which Jesus spoke is His promise to send the Holy Spirit to dwell in us. To overcome all fears and challenges, to live in abundant joy with the knowledge that He gives us peace that lasts forever.
Jesus gave us too much to allow the gloom of the world to crush our inner joy.
