J.M. " Murph" Everett went home to the Lord late Monday night. He was about to go back to the nursing home to see his beloved wife of more than fifty years, Midge. She is recovering from a major stroke and he stayed with her from morning till night every day since September. He treated Midge like a queen and to her, he was a knight in shining armor. The two always had such a deep love their gazes sparkled of a love still growing, still blossoming so that everyone could see their deep love for each other was founded upon their deeper love of God.
He saw some of the heaviest fighting in Korea and trudged around snowy mountains battling and evading more than 200,000 Chinese who poured across the border, but even the frostbite could not chill the excitement of her letters. A mutual friend suggested she write him and because of Murph's good reputation as a young man, her father allowed her to though they had never met.
The frostbite however, took its toll and prevented him from playing football for the Florida Gators after enrolling there upon his return from the war. He made the team, but the damage to his extremities was severe. He earned his degree and became a teacher. He touched thousands of lives and if you were ever with Mr. Everett, you would see generations of former students greet him with the warmest of embraces. He had that effect on everyone. Always positive, always an encourager, always humble, Mr. and Mrs. Everett made the world glow.
After retirement, he served on the school board and after that, very active in recognizing veterans' service as President of the Gilchrist County Historical Society. Mr. Everett was all about serving his fellow man. He taught Sunday School for generations and served in numerous leadership capacities at Bethel Baptist Church in Bell, FL. Mr. Everett is the perfect example of a noble life and Christian virtue, and the world is a drearier place without him.
Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us not to love this world, but to love God first and love each other as He has loved us. We should all aspire to demonstrate God's love as Mr. Everett did. I can hear Jesus Christ on His throne of Glory saying," Well done, good and faithful servant."
