When I was a kid, horror movies, occult practise, gross displays of violence and related 'dark side' activities seemed to be the exception, not the 'norm'. Things have changed. Every month, every day, is 'halloween'. In the internet age all things 'dark' are cool. Shock and horror seem to be part of a huge global competition. It's as if everyone is in a race to see who can outshock or horrify the most. What's the big 'fix' everyone gets from pursuing all things horrifying?
Turn on your TV, hit the movie theatres, and more than half of what's out there has a supernatural bent that seems fully intended to glorify violence, vampires, ghouls, voodoo, death, destruction, darkness and all things evil. Except evil is no longer called 'evil'. In our 21st century 'enlightened age' it's hard to find much 'light' and what seems obviously bad is called 'good. Take the example of a human cadaver exhibit currently displayed in my city, and on tour globally. The 'display' is one I refuse to provide a link to on any web page, but you can Google 'Bodies' and find it easily enough. The 'display' uses human cadavers and corpses as 'property', not as people who once had lives and who ought to have experienced the dignity of burial. No. In the name of science, the company that owns this 'display' is doubtless laughing all the way to the bank as the feckless public throws away hard-earned dollars to ogle at dead people.
How did we sink so low? The fact is, darkness encroaches. Darkness isn't obvious. It sneaks up like inner city crime, or garbage in an alleyway. You remember the old horror films you used to watch. They didn't terrify instantly. First, there was the ominous music, then the slow trek down a dark path into deep woods, finally...the horror. Things are far more sophisticated with horror today. You can get as much horror as you want, when you want, and then some. But darkness has an impact. The more you allow or 'engage' darkness, the more immune you become to its effects. One day, darkness has you by the throat and you don't even know it.
Above all, darkness 'sells'. When a serial killer like Canada's recently defrocked 'Colonel' Williams was put on trial for his evil acts of torture and murderous crimes, the media rushed up to the plate to feed on the story and you guessed it...to make more $$ by publicizing as much of Williams unspeakable acts as possible. Many may turn around and say, 'So what...?' Many would sooner worry about 'super bug' pandemics than think of the spiritual pandemic of 'darkness' permeating society through crime, media and other venues.
What's the solution? The fact is, dark times are nothing new. But we can learn from the lives of others who have fled darkness.
In the first century, Paul, a former torturer of Christians, a man who sent fear into the hearts of people who followed Christ Jesus, became a man who risked his life instead to tell others about the "Light of the World" - Jesus. Paul wasn't naive about darkness. He knew it was real, and he warned of impending darkness in the 'last days', "There will be terrible times. People will be lovers of self and of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, love-less, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God..."
But Paul knew the truth - Light banishes darkness, (Ephesians 5: 1-16) "You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as people of light..." God's Word sets a standard. Light is separated from darkness, and "He who made light to shine out of darkness, shines in our hearts."
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome." John 1: 5
