Faith
He is standing on the edge of his bed while his dad is urging him, “Go ahead, son, jump into my arms, I’ll catch you.” The child looks at his dad’s outstretched arms, and then he looks below. Jumping, would have expressed his unhesitating faith. Inspecting the ground exposed his illusive fears. Thoughts of suffering ignites his distress, and questions race through his mind. “What if I slip and fall?…What if he misses?…Would it hurt real bad?” He looks at his dad’s arms and appraises the angles. The distance between him and the ground is greater than the gap between him and his father. His dad discerns his child’s anxiety. Gently, he says, “Come on…jump…I promise, I won’t let you fall.” His dad holds his arms out farther and waits. The child looks at him again; but this time he is not trying to determine how far the jump is going to be or the level of pain he would endure if he fell. His attention is drawn to the love emanating through his father’s eyes. He felt this protective love when his dad taught him how to swim. His head never went under water, just like he had promised. When he taught him how to ride his bicycle he never let go of the seat, just like he had promised. On his first day of kindergarten he stayed with him all day, just like he had promised. His security was anchored in his dad’s word. As he stands there, the trust in his dad relieved his worries. He inches closer to the edge of the bed. He extends his arms, bend his knees and leans forward. Instead of focusing on his fears, he focuses on his father - and leaps.
The only way to overcome fear is to trust God.
