Only God

Who can view the end of the universe?
Whose vision the oceans length traverse?
Who may fathom the earth’s inner core?
Or see beyond the stratosphere ere more?
Where lies privilege to future’s incident?
To see beyond these rife moments events?
Not you or I for we are but mere humankind,
sorely lacking in structure of enigmatic mind.
Only God, a perfect and immeasurable entity
Lays claim to an overwhelming sacred proclivity.

Adrienne Gallagher Dominici copyright 2/3/04

"I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ." (Ephesians 3:17, 18)

One of my favorite games to play with my wonderful grandchildren is “how much do I love you?” For my tiny treasures it is difficult to fathom how much I love them, so I stretch my arms out as wide as I can and say "more than this much." They squeal with laughter and warm my heart with broad smiles of delight. As they grow in years and intelligence I say “I love you higher than the sky and wider than the oceans” and they respond with “Oh, Grandma”. However, once more their broad delightful smiles betray their joy. As they stand at the brink of adulthood I tell them they will only truly glimpse the depth of my love for them when they hold their own children in their arms and then they will have a relatively close understanding of how much I love them.

We too, come relatively close to understanding the depth of God’s love for us when we become parents. However, it is only a partial revelation. Only when we actually stand before His throne, will we be able to grasp what His love is truly all about. The sacrifice of the Cross is pivotal to even glimpsing the realization of God’s love, but even that is minute compared to the moment when we actually feel the intense radiance of His infinite, unending, everlasting love. How can finite minds actually comprehend the unfathomable?
