Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday September 23, 2009
It seems to me that I have latched on to some really great sayings this week for our thoughtful consideration especially as these gems are in line with scriptural truth.
My quote today comes from a man who has lived the American Dream. Born in Hall, Indiana, (You can't get there from where you are) later moving to Martinsville, IN and then a career as a college athlete and later a Hall of Fame coach, who actually coached in Terre Haute, where I have hung my hat for near 20 years, at Indiana State University. He is in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach. In addition coach Wooden went undefeated 4 seasons and coached the teams to TEN National Championships.
WOW
He made a statement that goes much deeper than winning or losing over court adversaries, one that probes deep into the very soul of a person:
"There is no pillow as soft as a clear conscience."
The above was said by the gifted John Wooden.
That the bulk of the people who populate the world suffer from a guilty conscience is clear. The old line that I learned as a child is making the rounds again, "It's not what you eat but what is eating you that is the problem." Keeping a clear conscience takes away the power that evil has over you and gives it back to you, thus helping you to think and feel right which enhances your efforts toward your goals.
Integrity is the word that must be active in the keeping of a clear conscience. Integrity is a simple word and rather easy to spell. But keeping your integrity is a tough matter, for it will be tested, usually several times each day. I often wonder "How many millions of people lie awake fretting over having given up their integrity, and their conscience will not let it go?" One of my goals is to make sure that today there will be at least one less. And hopefully you will join me in this easy to set goal. Sticking to it requires power from the Lord and a super strong commitment from you, and an even stronger one from me.
Our statement from coach Wooden, a coach who is astounding in today's world. he lead his teams to Ten National Championships. Have you read or heard of his 7 point creed?
I will share it with you at the end of this letter. I am having the creed done in calligraphy and will have it placed in front of my work station as a reminder.
Here is Coach Wooden's creed, the creed of a true blue winner with a clear conscience:
• Be true to yourself.
• Make each day your masterpiece.
• Help others.
• Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
• Make friendship a fine art.
• Build a shelter against a rainy day.
• Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.
Solomon put it like this in Proverbs 22:1:
"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold."
