Are You Waiting Until God Speaks To You?
By Joe Herrera
Scripture: "...Wait here until I have received instructions for you from the LORD." Numbers 9:8
Do you ever have a need, or a question that needs an answer; a solution like RIGHT NOW?! Maybe you are on the verge of making a decision that could potentially change your life, but you don't know how to proceed! Are you caught between rock and a hard place? Are you asking continuous questions about your life, your job, and your relationships; and still find yourself more confused than ever? Well take a walk with me and look at what God may show you today about this:
Observation:
There was a need from some men in the camp of Israel : it was Passover and everyone else was celebrating, except these men! They couldn't actually, because they were ceremonially unclean; they had touched a dead person! Now back in those days that was a 'no, no'...therefore they could not offer the Passover sacrifice and partake in the celebration with the community. These men came up to Moses with their need! However Moses didn't know the correct solution to their specific need. Therefore, Moses told them to 'wait here..."
Many times I don't know what to do in a given situation, and yet I don't wait for guidance; for instructions. I jump right into the problem: wanting to solve it myself. I fumble my way through it experiencing tons of strife, heartache, and IF I am fortunate I may just reach my goal as if scratching by. But usually I don't attain my goal; I fall flat on my face because I did not practice the principle of waiting on God for some instructions. The Bible says, "Be still and know that I am God". Listen God knows we need answers, and that we need them quick; therefore he doesn't expect us to wait really long periods of time for them. But the reality is that we often must pull back from the situation we are in, so we can see what God sees; and see what God wants done in that given situation. Seeing the BIGGER PICTURE! There is a period of waiting, a process; we must all go through before we make any decisions. I don't know about you but anytime I made a hasty decision it always didn't measure up to what I had desired. Therefore, it is through this process where we learn some of our greatest lessons. We learn about character (strengths & flaws), but more importantly we learn about God and his character! We learn more about his ways, patterns, and methodologies! We learn the hard lessons of humility; depending on God - especially when the demands of a result oriented society are placed before upon us.
God is a faithful God! I remembered a few years ago, I needed guidance toward the call I sensed in my life - I had tons of questions, yet no answers! So, during this time I was wondering whether or not God called me to the office of 'pastor-teacher'; to the calling of speaking/preaching/teaching his word to the masses. Now during this time I really wasn't doing any teaching or preaching, therefore I didn't have the concrete experience to confirm that 'YES!!! This is what God wants me to do!!!” Therefore, I had this strong urgency to share and release with others all the revelations and insights God was showing me. But the problem I had: there were no opportunities given to me to do so; or at least that's how I perceived it at the time. So one day I got down on my knees and fervently asked God, "...am I called to be a speaker of your word..."?
So there I was, waiting, waiting, and waiting in my state of communion with God. Finally, he spoke and I heard it so clearly; the echo that resounded within me: "read 1 Peter 4:11". Understand that this was really early in my walk with God; and I HEARD HIM!!!! Now at the time I never had read that passage before, so I got up and went toward the passage! Now to my amazement it said, "Are you called to be a speaker? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you..." I WAS SHOCKED!!! I WAS AWESTRUCK!!! I was humbled that God answered me in this manner.
Long story short: I waited for him, and waited for his instructions; and he surely gave them to me! Currently, I find myself speaking, teaching, preaching to children and adults; the word of God! That word God gave me: I AM LIVING IT NOW! GOD IS FAITHFUL!!! The question I challenge you all today with is: are you willing to wait on Him to give you instructions and guidance toward the life decisions you will need to make? He surely is waiting to release it to you and for you! Why? All so that you may live with a greater purpose: to glorify and honor Him throughout your life in Christ! So wait there until you receive instructions from your Heavenly Father!
Application:
In the midst of uncertainty, seek God's guidance
As you seek Him, wait for his instructions
Humbly expect to receive answers from God
Live in the light of His instructions for your life
Prayer:
Father, thank you that you are always willing and faithful to provide us with instructions on how to proceed or live our lives, on how to make decisions, and on how to relate with you and our fellow man. Train us in the discipline of waiting on you, that we may always rely on you no matter where we find ourselves. Continue to speak to us and show us your ways, that we may always honor you in all that we do!
In Jesus' loving name, Amen!
