Scripture: Numbers 3
Key Verse: “…They were assigned the area…responsible to care for…” Numbers 3:23-25
Do you ever feel like your life has no meaning? Maybe you are going through a funk right now at your job, in ministry, maybe even at home. Are you wondering why am I even doing, WHAT I'm doing? Why am I working at this job that I hate? How did I end up with THAT assignment? Why ami stuck doing this job, and not that job? I know many times I have found myself wondering these very same questions, and no answers came! But thank God, he is good...and he always provides a solution, or a way to look at things through his perspective. Through a Biblical perspective. If you want to know how God wants you to view these difficult times of "WHY"!!! Then read below and see what God may be telling you:
The Lord gave Moses specific instructions; he told him to appoint - to assign the Levites as the assistants to Aaron and his sons. They were chosen by God as the substitutes for the firstborn sons of Israel . They were chosen to serve Aaron, his sons, and the community; performing their sacred duties in and around the Tabernacle. They would, in other words, be the 'assistant priests' to Aaron. For God said, anyone other than a priest or Levite who came too near the sanctuary was to be executed. God meant business when he appointed ONLY the priests and the Levites to perform these duties.
They were not called into battle, or to get down and dirty with the other men. NO!!! They were called to stay at bay and take care of the furniture of the Tabernacle. (If you are a guy, I think most of you would have preferred to go into battle). The Levites were called to set up and break down this tent almost every single day. Each clan and family group of the Levites were all given specific functions and assigned specific areas where they would dwell and perform their duties. Everyday, they had to perform the same functions over and over again, all because God said so. For some of us, this would bring utter boredom. Some of us like change, and break the monotony! But if that is you then, I challenge you today to take a census of the things God has given you to do; take an inventory of the resources he has placed before you, because this will help you to realize what you have and how you can better serve God more effectively at your workplace, home, church, etc. This will revitalize your life with purpose. It will get your mind into gear in order to prepare for the tasks you are to perform.
Going back to our story...you know, what struck me about this chapter in Numbers? It was the repetition of the phrases…"they were assigned the area…were responsible to care for." This phrase hit me up the head showing me how God himself will assign us to a specific area in the church, in ministry, in our lives, in our jobs; and we are the ONLY ones God has chosen in that area that can perform that function. However, it is not so much that we are the only ones for that assignment, (let's be humble now) but it's our responsive obedience to THE assignment God has given us, that is important. For we must do our part in obeying his commands, his instructions to perform the specific duties we are responsible for. God does his part by calling us, assigning us to a mission; but we must then in full respond to that call with obedience. No matter what it may be!!! We must learn to stay in the lane God has called us to and move only when he says to move!
God had given specific responsibilities to the Levites, and they were commissioned to perform them with excellence. They were authorized by God as the only ones who would deal directly with the Tabernacle and its various counterparts: furnishings, equipment, etc. God himself will appoint you and me to service, to serve him and our community; and what he expects from us is to perform the functions he sets forth before us. What he expects from us is to be responsible for the area he has appointed, called, and assigned us to.
When we care for the things God has told us to do, this brings excellence and honor to God’s name. When we care for things that God cares for, this is an indication to you, that you have entered the very heart of God. This brings glory to our maker, because we are reflecting his character of greatness, holiness in the areas HE CARES FOR! When we care for what He cares for, we in turn show people the true nature of God!
Application:
·I must serve in the area God has called me to.
·I must take responsibility for the area, duties, and functions God has appointed me to.
·I must care for the things God instructs me to care for.
Prayer:
Father, I come before you and I ask you to teach me ways to internalize and implement this principle of being responsible to care for the area I have been assigned to. Teach me to stay in the area you have assigned me to, that I may honor you as I obey your call, your assignment for my life. I pray, that through my service unto you, people may see your character of excellence, your character of glory. Help me Holy Spirit to walk in excellence, to walk in a manner worthy of the calling God has given me. Help me Holy Spirit to be more responsible to care for the things God has instructed me and showed me to care for. I trust that Lord you will show me the way to practice being more responsible in the areas you have assigned me to. In Jesus’ name! Amen
