I probably covered this before, but it bears repeating.
Use comma to set off a name, an endearment term, a nickname, a person's title, or anything that you are addressing directly.
Mike, there's a cow in the garden.
Where are you going, my girl?
No, Your Honour, I have no idea.
Good morning, coffee. Good to see you again.
Thank you, friends, for the wonderful gift.
Again, ANYTHING (any noun) you are addressing must be set off by commas, even in titles of songs or books or in poetry.
Goodnight, Irene
Ah, Wilderness! (Eugene O'Neill)
Oh, March, come right upstairs with me,
I have so much to tell!
from Dear March, come in! by Emily Dickinson.
You left me, sweet, two legacies ...
In a poem by the same name, by Emily Dickinson.

Thanks, Ann. I agree, at least for me.Ann wrote:I probably covered this before, but it bears repeating.

I write even when I think I can't, because I must.
I love to write. Nothing escapes the crush I have on the written word. I'm hooked on words!!

Re: Commas in Direct Address
Hmm. Puzzling. I don't remember posting anything about spelling problems...head scratcher.

Re: Commas in Direct Address
I think I've solved the mystery! Picture me rubbing my hands together and laughing maniacally! Muhhaamuhaaha (teehee is just way more me!)
So originally, Lillian quoted Ann. Period, but then cgalmand quoted Lillian, but she added the extra line about spelling in that same box between Lillian's line and signature.
So Ann said: I probably covered this before...
Lillian wrote: Thanks Ann, I agree.
Then Cgalmand wrote in the quote box: and for me as well, they are my downfall and spelling!
Then after some white space Lillian's name showed up in the signature. I'm going to try to replicate it in next box.
No worries though cgalmand, things like that happen. Just remember if you use the quote box to put your line underneath the box!
Now normally, I wouldn't go to such detail to solve a mystery, but it's 3 am, I'm still exhausted from my son's wedding but can't sleep, and I love a good mystery. Hmm, apparently even mediocre ones! Teehee.

I have to believe, Helen, that you are talking about Ann’s original post.
After her post, well...???
