I'm a bit unclear about exactly what rights are signed away when we enter an item in the challenge. I understand that we give FaithWriters the right to use the piece, but do we retain rights to use it as well, including selling it? If so, does that include listing it as "for sale" here on the site?
Thanks for your clarification.

I was just about to post the same question! I'm glad someone else did.Betsy_Markman_1 wrote:I'm a bit unclear about exactly what rights are signed away when we enter an item in the challenge. I submitted my first article to the challenge and if it's not an editor's pick or a top ranked, can I still list it for sale or try it somewhere else?
Is it just first rights we sign away for the challenge?
Thanks for posting, I look forward to the answer !
From somewhere between my toes and my head, the words come.
If you place in the Writing Challenge, you are giving FW the right to publish it in the anthology. It will be stored on the site in with the rest of the challenge pieces. But beyond that, you retain all other rights. You can sell it to republish elsewhere, but you need to let them know it has appeared elsewhere.
FWs have had their entries published again. Many take the original entry, change it up a bit (based on the feedback they may have gotten), make it into a longer piece and sold that.
The possibilities are endless.
One thing to remember, do not repost it anywhere publicly until after results have been posted, so as to not have a judge see it accidentally somewhere else before judging is done.

Re: Rights and The Challenge
I'm not sure if I missed this, so I'm going to take a chance and ask it again.
When an EC is selected for publication, FW has first rights. Can the author publish the article elsewhere BEFORE it appears in an Anthology, or must the author wait until after it's published by FW?

Lillian, we don't have first rights. We just ask for the right to publish it in one of the anthologies. You can use it anywhere else, as long as the publisher is aware that it your work is going to be published in one of the books.
We try to make it as easy for authors as possible.
Love, Deb

Re: Rights and The Challenge
Maybe this question is already under another topic, and if so, I apologize in advance. I am wondering what the circulation for the faithwriters books are (the books that are compiled of "the Challenge" entries). I'm looking at entering a contest and there is a circulation ceiling in order to be considered a "new" writer.
Sincerely,
Joanna Stricker

Re: Rights and The Challenge
Hi Joanna.
I think you'll be safe to enter as a new author for the time being. There's quite a backlog of books to be published, so enter the contest.
