Help! A Parenthesis Problem

Post by oursilverstrands »

Which is correct? I think the first is correct, but not with 100% certainty.

Her words bespoke a heavy heart. “…Call me Mara (Bitter)…Why then call me Naomi (Pleasant), since the Lord has witnessed against me and the Almighty has
afflicted me ?” (Ruth 1:20).

I'm no expert either, but I'd say the first example is correct.

I'm not an expert either (for which I am glad - an ex is a has been and a spurt is a drip under pressure) but the question is contained within the quotation marks, so therefor the question mark should also be there. The scriptural reference is outside of the question and should be where it is in the first example, added by the writer at the conclusion of what it refers to.

The first example is therefore correct in my opinion.

I apologize to all experts in all areas of life for my pun; put it down to jealousy.

Blessings, Graham
May we all get eyes to see and ears to hear,
A Revelation of His Word, crystal clear.
Admitting our need to be drawn in,
Less of self, more of Him.

My prayer for us all.
God bless us with the Revelation of His Word, Graham
