Sibermom, I googled a bit and found this 2015 article in Native American Times. According to this article, at least, the term "Indian" is acceptable to Native Americans. I love the last paragraph:

This PBS article concurs, and also contains additional interesting information on the subject. Although dated 2006, it was written long after the presumed switch from "Indian" to "Native American" was made:
