Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons--PUNCTUATING DIALOGUE

Hi Jan, yes the ; was meant to be funny. I'm learning about forums in these lessons too. I've often wondered why things I've said have not gone over well, but in a forum the inflection of voice can not be heard. What sounds funny when said can make you look weird when written. I must try to remember...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons--PUNCTUATING DIALOGUE

Hey; I'm back. 1. End punctuation, as I understood it, was dependent upon the context. If speech, the period etc goes inside the quotation marks. If quoting from a book and the quoted section ends with an appropriate punctuation, then again the quotation marks go outside. BUT, if I only quote in par...

Re: New Writing Lessons--WHAT A CRITIQUE LOOKS LIKE

Good on ya, Jan. I really look forward to and obviously need that lesson. Actually I dug a little deeper into both my memory and the subject and guess what? when I read about en and em dashes the flickering embers of yesterday stirred and I do sort of remember them - being taught but not what was ta...

Re: New Writing Lessons--WHAT A CRITIQUE LOOKS LIKE

I don't want anybody to feel that they need to be worried about offending me. The whole idea of this is to jump in, rip the piece (and the writing skills of the writer for all I care) apart and learn, learn, learn. Dave said: ...and feel a little guilty that I did not pick up on all those semi-colon...

Re: New Writing Lessons--Part 2, Commonly Misused Words

What happens if I tell a lie; I thought that meant I had to get on my knees. Because punctuation is not my strong point, I join this conversation with a little caution. I studied in England. If I was quoting something from some where I would use 'quote'. The double marks "This is what I am sayi...

How dare you all talk about me like this    Hey guys, this is great and I've got to say that I keep learning all the time. Jan and Steve (and everyone else of course), you guys are great. My level of education pales compared to you guys and to be quite honest I haven't got the faintes...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS

First of all I just want to say a really big thanks; what a great gift you give us by doing this. I didn't realize until I jumped onto this thread how helpful and enjoyable these lessons are. Thank you. Feedback: Myriad would always take me off course of course (pun intended) because for my 'brain f...

Re: Redundant

I agree with Shann; the unexpected is redundant in its current location but reads with more strength when placed as '... a variety of surprises complete with odd, unexpected twists and turns...' Interestingly, I read 'surprises' first time through but had to go through slowly to find 'unexpected'; m...

Re: Help! A Parenthesis Problem

I'm not an expert either (for which I am glad - an ex is a has been and a spurt is a drip under pressure) but the question is contained within the quotation marks, so therefor the question mark should also be there. The scriptural reference is outside of the question and should be where it is in the...

Re: Newbie from Missouri

Just found your devotional on the Lord's Prayer. You can post the link in forums. The easiest way, but I believe there are other ways, is to go to the page of the devotional, highlight the address bar (www.etc.) right click and copy. Then return to the body of text in the forum, right click and past...
