Re: Be A Better Writer--ASK ME ANYTHING
I have an idea for a future lesson, or future lessons: Tips for self-editing. (Reduce adjectives, adverbs, and passive phrasing, and read your draft out loud for sound and rhythm, etcetera). I've come up with my own list of self-editing tasks, but my list is quite long and realistically unattainabl...

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING DIALECT
We are now half way through reading Huckleberry Finn . I started out by reading aloud the n- word, and I talked about it with my children, but my husband was very uncomfortable with how frequent it is, and now I substitute it with "negro." Jim's dialect was very difficult for me to read an...

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING DIALECT
The thought of writing dialects freaks me out, but I sure enjoy reading stories by good writers who do it well. I'm reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn out loud to my kids right now, and I love reading Huck's voice, but Jim's is crazy hard to read out loud, and half of the time I don't know w...

Re: Be a Better Writer--THE SIXTH JUDGING CRITERION
I'm glad that you wrote on this topic, because I wasn't really sure how the judges looked at this criterion. I think being aware of the importance of "having a point" is helping me to be more focused.

Re: Be a Better Writer--A quick grammar lesson
Thank you for this lesson, Jan! Commas have frightened me since I began writing, and it wasn't until I started to grasp the rules that they began to lose their terror for me. After years of winging it, I'm starting to get a wee bit more comfortable with the little guys. :D And apostrophes! I know th...

Re: Be A Better Writer--Deus ex machina
I love the original story! The second ending does leave me feeling cheated. Thank you for this lesson and for pointing out how we can use foreshadowing to give the reader a hint.

Re: Be a Better Writer--GREAT ENDINGS
Toni is my challenge buddy and when I first read this story I really did laugh out loud at that last line.
I just reread it and read through the comments too. The "conversation" on that story had me throwing back my head and guffawing! I had to read it to my husband too.

Re: Be a Better Writer--GREAT ENDINGS
I think that it's a great idea to revise some of your older lessons! I would love to go through them all, but I really do love the interaction with everyone. I find endings are the hardest part of writing my challenge entries! Here is the ending to a super dark piece that I wrote recently. Selling M...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Cliches
I think some clichés can be quite local. A friend of mine from the southern United States (I'm in Canada) said that something was "such a pill." I had to get her to explain that, and I think it meant that it was "hard to swallow" or difficult to accept.

Re: Be a Better Writer--Cliches
Yikes! I was so busy when you posted your lesson that I decided to come back to it later, but I totally forgot. I'm so glad that Jay posted. This was the hardest homework that you've assigned yet. (For me anyway!) I'm kind of embarrassed to post this, because I think I'm way off on a few of them, bu...
