Re: Be A Better Writer--Self-Editing

Lillian, after reading your post, I realized I do also give and receive advice based on the challenge rating categories. I always go down the list in my head and ask my husband, after I've read a story out loud - did it begin well? did it end well? did it make sense? in addition to correcting typos....

Re: Be A Better Writer--Self-Editing

I've done the "read backward" trick before - but I do word for word. Not for content but for silly typos. I try never to submit anything (or publicize in the case of my day job) without at least one other person's proofread, no matter how many times I've looked at it myself. Lillian, I'd s...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS

You chose some interesting examples for us to ponder... and of the books I've read, I found my first instinct going with a non-physical antagonist. Here are some of my thoughts... To Kill a Mockingbird… Racism the Harry Potter Series… Valdemort by name, but essentially.. evil the Little House on the...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic

But as I ponder more, I wonder -- if the "backdrop" - the scene, setting, and circumstances were different, would the story have the same impact? My conclusion is "No". My only "red ink" would be the last sentence. In my very humble opinion, it doesn't seem to fit... o...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic

I'm so glad I can laugh about it now, because I still see the topic - I think it's so obvious to me! She wanted to lose weight and be thin, but instead of going slowly and carefully, she ran full steam ahead to get to her goal as fast as possible. And it backfired.... I did a lot of research on anor...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic

Jan, I didn't have to re-read your first linked story to recall how impressed I was with how you wrote for the topic. The term "high-yellow was all I needed to hear to bring back memories of how your entry affected me. BUT... rereading it in context of this lesson, I noticed how often you refer...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Devotionals

I'd love it if you'd care to link to a devotional of yours that contains dialog or humor. I've had a more difficult time finding examples of that type of devotional to post here. I know this wasn't written to me, but I have one for you to look at. It was my entry for the "inspirational" t...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Devotionals

Finally, even though devotionals are aimed at Christians, I'm the kind of writer who always hopes that a non-Christian will some day encounter something that I've written. I want to write in such a way that she will keep reading. My desire exactly! I always keep the non-believer and questioner in m...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS

As I'm reading the replies and trying to remember what I want to comment on, the news is on in the background and I hear and interviewee say, ".... I just felt nauseated when ...." :D I misuse that one a lot (not alot). Steve, I love the questions you raised. When I was reading the correct...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS

I poured a glass of lemonade before opening this post. I eager to pore over Jan's new lesson, but I was anxious about all of mistakes I'm sure I've made in my writing. I'd need something cool and soothing to refresh me. The majority of these surprised me. I guess my blonde roots are showing (as my d...
