Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

You are absolutely right Alison, and I wasn't trying to give all the credit to any one group or action. It all happened around the same time. I'm just saying things have changed for the better, thanks to everyone here and all that happened around that time.

Blessings, Graham.

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

I think the status quo is changing as far as giving and receiving critiques is concerned. I received an email from a friend regarding the comments made on one of my entries and this is a quote "I don't think it was the usual sugar and spice and all things nice". I've noticed that more peop...

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

I think it is important to remember the motive that should be behind every critique... to help. Sometimes, and I have been guilty, a critique giver can be thoughtless or perhaps over step the mark... but they are only trying to help us to improve as writers. If we can get past the personal hurt then...

Re: Be a Better Writer--TELL, DON'T SHOW? WHAT?

Hi Jan. Great lesson and one I whole heartedly agree on. I used to 'tell' too much, but when learning to 'show' I found I still needed to switch back to 'tell' sometimes; especially for pace and immediacy. It really does need to be learnt in balance -- which I'm still trying to do. I also appreciate...

Wow! That just about sums it up.

Thanks for the cheers and well done every one who entered.

Congratulations to Gerald and Kenn.

And thanks to Giovanna, my wife, and Dave Walker, my writing buddy, who deserve a medal for all of their help and encouragement.

Blessings, Graham.

Re: Be a Better Writer--MASTERING METER

Jan you ask: I'm not sure where you pronounce an 11th syllable in that last line, but it's certainly an Aussie thing, I'll bet. Let me look at that line again: Here they are nurtured, in this earthy home. Isn't 'here' two syllables -- he re? Doesn't the rule of syllables being formed by vowels apply...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MASTERING METER

Hi Jan, first let me apologize for missing so many lessons. My wife and I have had a lot of health issues lately and some things have just had to take a lesser role; sadly, that included my focus on learning. I understand what poeticgent is saying, because it was my attitude too for a long while. I ...

Re: Moving up a level

Congratulations on your win. Don't worry about the next entry, it happens all the time, as Jan said, because your next entry always goes in before the winners are announced. For the same reason you may well win two weeks in a row; taking first place in the same level twice. Again, it happens and not...

Re: A Newbie with two questions

Hi, I'm not 100% sure of this but here is how I see it. There are four places to place your writings; Regular Article Submission, Free Reprint Articles, The Challenge and the Critique Circle. When placing something in Regular Articles you can choose to nominate it as either "For sale" or &...

Re: Winners for LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL Challenge

You have my vote on that one too Deb. Not complaining about the few dollars I have won in the Challenge, or the thrill of placing in the EC group, but by far the best prize I have ever received was when someone showed me something that really helped me to improve as a writer.

Blessings, Graham.

Hi Jan, and all who sail here. I'd like to make a few comments before I do my homework if I may. I lovethe freedom of expression here. Sheldon's comments are so valid, and yet I don't see them in conflict with Jan's, simply different because we are all different. What ministers to one heart with the...

Re: Winners - 2013 Fiction Page Turner Contest

I want to take my hat off to not only the winners but to everyone that entered. I think you are all winners. To even enter makes you so. I want to encourage those who did not make the first three places; don't be disocouraged, finnish the book. The art of reading is slowly dying, it needs our storie...
