Re: Writing for Children - Picture Books Part 2

You answered my question on the first post. I guess I wasn't patient enough. The points about page turns and endings and reading it aloud are particularly helpful. Never mind. All your points are helpful. Thanks.

Re: Writing for Children - Picture Books Part 1

Is there still a standard length for picture books? When I researched it a few years ago, it was 32 pages, including coverplate and other things. I didn't come across the concept of leaving part for the illustrator, but that makes sense. I've written a book and a friend has illustrated it and we wor...

Re: Writing Biblical Fiction

I agree with Joanne that writing Biblical fiction should be treated like writing historical fiction - after all, that's what it is. So the facts need to be researched and it needs to feel authentic. I'm not sure I've done that, but as a reader I notice. But I think a bigger problem could lie with in...

Re: Writing Biblical Fiction

I've tried 3 and 5. I don't like 1 or 2 because they feel like I'm playing around with the integrity of scripture. But I agree that God intends us to use our creativity, which is why I'm comfortable with the others. I enjoyed Waves of Grace, Cat. The drama was excellent. Here's a link to one that fi...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CAPITALIZING PRONOUNS FOR GOD

I stated capitalizing God's pronouns when I started writing a lot. For respect. But what you wrote makes perfect sense and even though it will be hard, I intend to stop using caps for pronouns. Unless, of course, the editor wants them.

Re: Be a Better Writer--NONFICTION AND RESEARCH

Jan, thanks for your comments. As always, they are helpful. As far as the quotation marks in the text, that's where I'm struggling with the principles of citing sources. I know how John felt because he wrote about it in a letter and the word in quotes are his words. his “heart began to thump and pou...

Re: Be a Better Writer--NONFICTION AND RESEARCH

My question is related to creative non-fiction. I'm struggling with how to use the research in the narrative. I'm writing a biography based mostly on letters written by my subject. He described a tonsillectomy he went through in 1920. I also found a medical resource from that period that described t...

Re: Be a Better Writer--WRITING IN DIFFERENT TENSES

This isn't the assignment, but I thought it would be interesting to add that I recently overheard my 6 year old granddaughter playing pretend with her brother. She narrated her actions in first person, past tense. "I went to the barn and fed the chickens and then I closed I fed the pigs. I was weari...

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING IMAGERY

In "You can't make this stuff up" Lee Gutkind writes about using intimate details to make your non-fiction come alive for the reader. As I understand it, that means adding a descriptive word or a detailed object. For example (mine, not his): The little bird climbed to the top of the lamp. The little...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MEMOIR AND 1ST PERSON NARRATIVE

I think I'm going to print out this lesson and post it by my computer. I had a similar experience to Cat's. After my son had leukemia, I tried writing about it many times, in many different ways. Most of them aren't worth reading. But I finally found my voice, through the challenge, and after revisi...

Re: Be a Better Writer--BIOGRAPHY

Thank you, Jan. The definitions are clear and very helpful. Now I'm off to write some biography. Rather, I'm off to do research for a biography.

Re: Be a Better Writer--BIOGRAPHY

Jan, this is exactly what I was looking for. I guess I first needed to have the differences between biography, memoir and whatever else there is defined for me. Jaydavidking's story and both of Steve's have given me a better idea of what biography is. It's also clear that the way to grab the reader ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--BIOGRAPHY

You have a lot of useful information here. I'll have to sort through it, but my first thought is that I have written several challenge articles that are in the middle. They are based on actual events and people, but I was pretty loose about changing some of the facts to make them into a story. I def...
