my steps came easy,
the way seemed right,
but somewhere, somehow
along the broad road
my back took on a heavier load
and the light of day
turned into the dark of night.
The glory of the famous
and promises of friends,
the wisdom of the wisest men,
the strength of the mighty
and wealth of the rich
suddenly weren't
what they seemed to have been.
I woke up in a wilderness,
abandoned in loss and confusion,
blinded to the wells of truth,
bound in the dread of my own delusion.
"It is death that you are striving in,
a voice in the wasteland cried,
there's no verity in the desert,
follow me to the river's side."
Then an angel of light
offered water and bread
and my flesh reached in haste
but the voice filled my head.
Though I hungered and thirsted
the voice warned my heart
and I fled from the angel
as the bread turned to darts.
I searched for the river
with all the might within me;
with all the wisdom,
all the strength I possessed,
when finally I came to
the end of myself
and laid me down to rest.
And laid down everything I owned;
my works, rewards,
most righteous desire
then down from the wilderness sky rushed a glorious, all-consuming fire!
As I watched in awe,
my 'best' fed the flame-
In a whisper of time all was swallowed.
Not a deed, not an ember,
not an ash remained,
then a familiar voice in the fire I followed
to the river.
I surrendered my life
at the water's edge
loosed of all but my sin.
My soul cried out for mercy and my Savior called me in-
to the beautiful river;
where He washed my eyes so I could see,
purged my heart
from the desert's debris,
cleansed and healed my aching feet
then showed me the way
and the walk of the free!
