Brownie Failure Humbles Homemakers

Our husbands once traveled across the continent together, hung a right at the Canadian border, and followed the Al-Can Highway to Alaska. This event left my friend, Debbie, and me solely in charge of things at the home front.

No problem. On our own, we dealt with stalled cars, sluggish toilets and clogged drains. From the safety of the depths of our closets, we bravely outlasted thunderstorms that could have been confused with the beginning of the end of life, as we knew it.

The nights were darker and longer and played host to stranger and louder sounds than any of the ones that were around at the same time our men folk were around. It was creepy to wonder how these alien creatures of the darkness knew that we were alone with the children.

We cared for the little ones through sniffles, spots, rashes and nightmares. I never did get a chance to build a shed I had in mind but I knew I could have handled it just fine. We did tackle the wallpaper in the kitchen, though. Hey, we were good and we knew it!

One day, feeling a little holy and invincible, as well as lonely we decided to bake some goodies to send to the guys. Our sense of well being increased as we mixed and stirred, and imagined the arrival of our offering to the lucky recipients.

Except…. for some reason, the brownies wouldn’t bake. No matter how long we baked them, they stayed definitely gooey. It was a mystery. Or at least it was a mystery until one of us spied the flour all measured out, but still setting on the counter.

In all of our accomplishments and over comings of the past few days we had triumphed, and now we had…..forgotten to put flour in the brownies!?

We had passed so many tests with flying colors. Yet we had failed at the simple every day task of making brownies.

How often in our lives we sail along through our trials, and we find ourselves passing tests we would not have chosen. Then along comes a simple everyday event, and down we go.

Fortunately, we serve a merciful God. He is there to lift us up when we fall. In the case of the gooey brownies, we all grabbed spoons and dug in, laughing. But there are other times when the failures in our lives bring us to our knees in heartbreak and in desperation. But He has promised to never leave us or forsake us, despite our mistakes. Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV) . ‘. . . .For He himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”.’

I love your sense of humor, Glenda. You should have seen the time my friend and I washed the dishes 3 times because after she dried them she kept putting them on the counter next to the sink!! (true story)

Oh, that line is terrific. What a chuckle I had! There were other lines, as well, but this one took the cake (or brownie, I suppose).

I loved the story. Nice resolution (grab the spoons!). Alas, as an analogy, it didn't really ring for me. I think making brownies might not be as much an "every day" thing for everyone as it is for you and your friend. I might have made brownies once before...it struck me as a simple, honest oversight, not really a failure, per se...I dunno, maybe it's just me. Perhaps most other readers will be able to identify better than I.

But that aside, again, the content is terrific, and very well presented. I enjoyed reading it all the way through. Great post. I look forward to more of your work.

What a sensible girl! What else would one do but "grab spoons and dig in?"
I am a big fan of making lemonade if all you get are lemons! Nice read. (Makes me want brownies)
