“Your work in our company has been quite good Mark. But as you know, we are downsizing and have to take tough decisions. I have to sack you now. Let me wish you all the best for your future” said the boss shaking hands firmly with Mark. Mark was devastated. The words, “…I have to sack you.” reverberated in his ears as he mechanically made his way to his cubicle. He collected all his things and had one last look at the place he had worked for the past few years. Reluctantly he went out, bidding farewell to his colleagues and friends.
“My boss and my friends have left me. I am not worthy enough to work here,” mused Mark as he slowly trudged back home.
“Whatever’s happened to you dear?” asked Deborah, his wife when she saw his care-worn face. “I have been fired from my job” he said and slowly recounted all that happened at his office. “I knew it! You were getting careless at work. You never bother to be up to the mark. In these days of competition and downsizing, if you don’t excel in your work, this is what happens. In fact, I am surprised how your boss tolerated your shoddy work all these days. Now, when are you going to get a new job? How are we going to pay the entire mortgage on the house and the car? Oh why did I have to marry you?” sobbed Deborah.
“Even my wife has all but forsaken me. What sort of a fellow am I? Am I worth something? Or am I a doomed failure?” Mark thought as he desperately tried to fight off dark thoughts of depression.
In his den at least, he slowly brought out his well-worn Bible. “Lord speak to me in this hour of despair” he prayed as he opened to read the Bible.
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you, nor forsake you”, Mark read from Deuteronomy (31:6)
He read again, from Joshua (1:5), “ I will not leave you nor forsake you”. As if in confirmation, he turned to the New Testament and read the very same words in a verse from Hebrews. (Hebrews 13:5).
Moved to tears by these encouraging promises of God, Mark opened his heart and prayed,” My loving Heavenly Father. You will never leave me nor forsake me. I may lose my job. My dear wife may not be happy with me. My friends and bosses may desert me. But you, my refuge art always with me. Your three fold promises today are so much refreshing to my soul today, Father! I trust and believe you, come what may. Is there anything I cannot face with You beside me? Thank you Lord! May your Name be blessed always! My beloved Promise Giver & Promise Keeper!”
Recharged as it were with his quiet time, the promises of God reverberating in his heart now, Mark set out to search for another job.
Depression and disillusionment driven into dynamism and direction! Oh the power of God’s promises. The word of God says, “Heaven and earth may pass away, but my word shall not pass away”.
God’s promises indeed are life changing!
