AN UNEXPECTED ROMANCE

A night of hassle
A snake of a line to the check-in counter
Restless passengers waiting endlessly
For information, for answers.

At long last they collect the luggage
Look at passports
Give out tickets, boarding passes
For another long wait to the plane

A motley crowd in a packed plane
Two passengers sit next to each other –
One abashed for speaking out of turn
In the serpentine queue to his neighbour.

She holds no grudges.
She is a good soul.
She looks at the white-haired man
His face lined with misery.

She senses an unhappiness,
His reticence
Sympathy stretched forth its hand
And touched a chord of reciprocity.

The ice is broken.
On a long and tedious flight
Conversation is better than silence
They have much in common.

A night-long dialogue
Few catnaps in between
An otherwise boring nine-hour
Journey becomes more interesting.

Destination arrived at
The aged man has lost his air of misery
His fellow passenger is amazed at
This visual transformation

Widower off to visit family members,
On holiday in the U.K.
Contacts divorcee also on vacation
Connection established.

They meet and sit together
On the return flight
Phone numbers exchanged
They promise to see each other again.

Romance is in bloom.
He introduces her to the “Daily Word”
Silent Unity’s most inspiring of booklets
They agree that God does work miracles.

They enjoy their moments together.
The joy God has brought into their life
Never ceases to amaze them
And they look to the future full of hope.

Oh, how exciting! You've painted such pictures with your words and brought such reality to it that it makes me want to run up and hug the old guy!
