SHH! HE’S WHISPERING
By
Anthony David Swaroop Kumar
The ascending notes of the alarm on my mobile interrupt my dream early in the morning. I spring up from my bed, wide awake. Then there’s the usual rush to get things done. Milk boiled, breakfast done and kids sent off to school. In the quiet aftermath I sit with my Bible for a quiet time. But as I sit, there are calls on my telephone, messages on my mobile and a few early morning visitors. Somehow I manage to read my Bible portion and a devotional. I quickly kneel down to pray.
I yearn to hear the voice of God. But what do I hear? Various thoughts meander through my mind as I kneel down, waiting. “What do you think you should do regarding that assignment? What about the session you need to take in the coming seminar? When do I begin the long pending project? Yesterday, how meanly she spoke to me….” There is no limit to these unwelcome thoughts.
Will not the Lord still this cacophony of thoughts and speak to me loud and clear? I muse. Why can’t He make His presence felt and speak loudly so I can hear?
“My child, it is not that I don’t want you to listen to me. I don’t want you to be overawed by me. I want you to earnestly desire to listen to me and that is why I am waiting. I don’t speak to you through the earthquake, fire or something spectacular. I prefer to be, to you, a still, small voice. My words to you will be in a whisper, my child.” (Based on I Kings 19: 11 – 13)
When can I hear the Lord’s whisper? Only when I quieten my soul. Only then am I receptive to His whispers. The Lord says,”… in quietness and trust is your strength...”(Isaiah 30:15) He also tells us, “ Be still and know that I am God…”(Psalm 46:10) The lord speaks to the prophet Zecharaiah and says, “ Be still before the Lord, all mankind, because he has roused Himself from his holy dwelling” (Zech.2:13)
We line in noisy times indeed. This makes us deaf to whispers of love. There is also the invisible pollution of the minds. This makes us less sensitive to the whispers of God. Every wakeful minute we are being bombarded by a multiplicity of inputs. Blaring adverts, bizarre thoughts, loud music, huge billboards and crass commercials, clash for their share of our attention, all the time!
Where is the time to sit still and listen to His quiet, loving, whispering? But then these are the whispers of love, the whispers of life. They have the power to transform you and me.
Let’s decide now to take time today to pause and quieten ourselves. Then we can clearly hear our loving Lord’s whispers!
