“Hey Joe, Hurry or we will be late!” The voice that young Joe Foster heard just outside His bedroom
Window was that of Pete Wilson, His best friend and hopefully His future teammate, it was Saturday
Morning, not just any Saturday, it was the day that all the ten to twelve year old boys had been waiting for
“Tryouts for the youth football team” “ O.k., I will be right out,” Joe cried back to Pete, “ Just let me get
My new football shoes on!” Joe went to His closet and opened the door, just like Mon had promised the
Sack with His new cleats were setting on the floor, She had gone shopping Friday night, and the last thing
Joe had asked Her was if She would remember to buy Him a pair of Nike cleats for the tryouts, Joe opened
The sack, inside Joe saw a pair of shoes, but they were not Nike, and they were not even new, Joe was so
Upset He almost did not see the note in the sack with the shoes, but as He dumped the polished but worn
And scuffed pair of shoes on the floor the note fell out, Joe opened the note and read it slowly, “ Dear Joe
I an sorry, I know I told you I would get you a new pair of shoes but they cost too much, so I got these
From the Goodwill store, I know they are your size, I even tried to polish them for you, please forgive me,
Love Mon.” The note made Joe think about the reason His Mon was having so much trouble, His Dad had
Died and His Mon had been forced to work two jobs for over the last year, but that did not make the hurt and sadness Joe felt over the shoes any better, Joe thought if only Dad was alive He would have known
How important those new cleats were. “ Joe, come on!” The distressed cry from Pete brought Joe out of His
Thoughts, it was too late to worry about the shoes, Joe would have to wear them, and He knew all the other
Boys at the tryouts would have new cleats; Joe quickly pulled the shoes on His feet and laced them up, they
Might not look very good but they were comfortable. Joe ran out of the bedroom and down the hall, then
Out the front door, almost running over Pete, who was standing next to the front steps of the house, both
The boys smiled at the near collision and then ran towards the park just a block away where the tryouts
Were to be held, Joe could not help but notice that Pete was wearing a new pair of shoes, when they
Reached the park the coach and most of the other boys were already there, and sure enough all the boys
Had on new cleats, Joe could feel His face burning, He knew it was turning red, just about then a car
Pulled up on the street next to the park and when the door of the car opened a boy in a football uniform
Slowly, but surly pulled himself out of the opened back door, He was dressed just the same as all the
Other boys except for one thing, He was not wearing new shoes in fact He was not wearing any shoes
He had no feet, all of a sudden Joe felt very blessed about His shoes.
