I’ve read opinions that Jesus is seeking hearts for His kingdom that display attitudes of humility and simplicity. I wonder if it goes beyond that. The more I learn about God and His human creation, the more I see life as multi-layered. If a human body has layers of skin, a tree has rings showing its growth pattern, I think our hearts – at least the invisible ones – must have layers also. As God reveals His truth, He cuts away and adds layers at His will.
Jesus came to bring sight to the blind, set captives free and give abundant life. The church in Laodecia thought it was rich. Jesus said that they were blind, wretched, poor and naked. I’ve been struck every time I read Jesus’ words to Laodecia. My life, compared worldwide, is full of wealth. I do not share a home with other families. I have a car to drive. I have items that have no earthly value except to bring me pleasure. I personally own 7 different Bible translations. I want to be poor in spirit not poor in my wretched blindness.
