M O U N T A I N S - T O W E R S OF S T R E N G T H

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem,
So the Lord is round about his people,
From this time forth and for ever-more.(Psalm 125:l-2 RSV)

The mountains lofty in their elevation
Look up to the heavens from their creation
A protective wall of defence from invasion
An impregnable force for many a nation

They look down on man from their exalted height
A wall of green rock that blocks the light
Of eastern sun running its course till night
And cools and refreshes our days with delight

The mountains are there for our protection
From blasting winds in our direction
Men cut the hills without consideration
Of the ill effects to the rest of the nation

The greed for riches blind the avaricious
To gouge out the high lands is so malicious
To build million-dollar houses - too perfidious
When the cruel floods swamp the oblivious

The nation watches with concern
Inconsiderate developers who earn
Through politicians too proud to learn
The lessons of history that they spurn

God in His generosity
Endowed the island of the Trinity,
Trinidad, with so much beauty
Like the Israelites of old they refuse to see

The harm that comes from negligence
Pray, Lord give my people some commonsense
Awaken their intelligence
Before they meet their recompense

This island of Trinidad is truly blessed
Three mountains run from east to west
Stopped hurricane Ivan in its quest
To devastate and destroy the rest

Of our neighbouring isles
It crossed the miles
Of sea and land, leaving piles
Of debris like discarded files

If we would only turn to God
And pay obeisance to his Word
Peace and love will be our reward
As we look to the mountains and heavenward.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills,
From whence does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.”
(RSV Psalm 121:1-2)

A view from a mountain indicates we have reached the top but we have to tread softly or we'll dip in a valley of darkness. This is a well illustrated piece of poetry, which to me, points to our daily lives and how we live it. I enjoyed this.
