That seemed like a strange reaction for someone who lives in western Washington and hears a lot of rain.
But the twin cities near our home had just experienced severe flooding earlier that week from three days of downpour, rivers overflowing, a dike breaking, and snow in the mountains melting quickly.
Two days ago it had stopped raining and the water had begun to subside. People were busy deciding what to do with their soggy, muddy homes.
Now it was raining again! What if it didn’t stop?
Then God reminded me of Genesis 7-9 and the first flood. The very first time it rained, it didn’t stop until the water covered the highest hills.
Now I could see what God had seen all along. After Noah’s family left the ark, the next time it began to rain they would panic. God understood that. He knew how frightening it would be. So He put the rainbow in the clouds as a promise that there would not ever be another flood to cover the whole earth.
I thought of those who started building the tower to save themselves in case it ever did flood again. I wasn’t so critical of them now. I felt more the strength of their temptation.
I also thought of those who believed God and did not join in the tower building. I admired them for their faith and their example that God can be trusted to keep His promises. They definitely belonged among the heroes listed in Hebrews 11.
I had a new and deeper appreciation for our faithful God who knew ahead of time what they would feel and provided assurance.
I could depend on that promise too.
