Aynos completed her task and bound for her apartment. Smiling inside as she walked across campus viewing the tissue paper drapings covering the branches of the trees along the path to the music building; she knew she had crossed the line. There had been no time to consider the consequences as the decisive moment was thrust upon her. Breaking the rules was not a way of life for this student; rules had set the perimeters of her life. She took them very seriously and exceeded their boundaries only after very careful consideration of the consequences.
This was a story that must remain tucked in her heart maybe even until the day she died.
It was her Graduation Day and the pomp and circumstance of the day was in command. After Graduation the traditional party was planned. The cake was cut and compliments and praise were abounding. Sentiment had mellowed Aynos’ composure.
Probably desiring to have clear justification for the sacrifices that had been made to bring this four (4) year to culmination, her Mother asked, “What is the most important lesson you learned in your four (4) years of college?” Everyone’s expectation was for great words of wisdom to come forth; her reply blew all expectations aside and cracked the pomp and circumstance of the day wide open.
“I learned to break the rules.” The wind from her words held each of her parents face in a frozen stare and grasped their vocal cords so that no sound could come forth. The moments seemed like hours before anyone could utter, “would you like to help us understand that”?
Soon the explanation was pouring out, the story had finally been released from the recesses of her heart by an innocent question. The answer was a revelation on the momentary priorities of life; sometimes you just have to Break the Rules.
