“You led me on.”
“I DIDN’T TRY.”
“But you did, and you made me cry.

“I’d bought a purse
And nice high heels.”
“AND A DRESS TOO, IT GAVE ME CHILLS.”

“You promised me.”
“AH, THIS I KNOW.”
“Then can you explain why you didn’t show?

“Did you forget?”
“NO, I DID NOT.”
“Well I think I’d rather that you’d forgot.”

“WELL,”
HE SIGHS AND LOOKS AROUND.
“Was it some other girl you found?”

“NOT EXACTLY.”
“What does that mean?”
“OF YOUR TWO QUESTIONS, SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN.”

“Why so vague?
What’s going on here?”
“CAN YOU BELIEVE IT WAS MY FEAR?”

“Your fear?
Of what, I don’t understand.”
“WILL YOU LET ME HOLD YOUR HAND?”

“Hold my hand?
I think not!”
“NOW I KNOW I’M IN A DREADFUL SPOT.

“I THINK I’LL TRY.”
“Please do good man.”
“I WILL DO THE VERY BEST I CAN.

“YOU SEE IT’S HARD.”
“It always is.”
“BUT NEVER AS MUCH AS WHEN IT WAS HIS.”

“His? Whose?
What’s he got to do with prom night?”
“SO MUCH, SO VERY MUCH AND IT GAVE ME A FRIGHT.

“YOU SEE I’D ASKED HIM.”
“You’d asked him what?”
“TO BE GENEROUS TO ME ON THIS ONE NIGHT, BUT. . .”

“Wait, I’m confused.
Please start from the start.”
“YES, I CAN SEE I’M NOT DOING MY PART.

“I NEED TO CONVEY
SO VERY MUCH MORE”
“Yes you do, or I’m walking out that door.”

“DON’T, PLEASE WAIT.”
“Why should that be?
It seems you were saving all your time for this he.”

“NO, THAT’S NOT TRUE.
ALL THE TIME WAS HIS.”
“Well, will you at least please tell me who this he is?”

“OH, THAT’S EASY.”
“Is it now?”
“HE’S THE GREATEST, THE MOST WONDERFUL, THE WHERE AND THE HOW!”

She tilts her head slightly.
HE SEEMS HAPPILY LOST.
“And for this I paid the ridiculous price that dress cost?”

“PRICE PAID.
WOW, NOW YOU’VE SAID A MOUTHFUL.”
“I can tell this nameless HE has a lot of pull.

“He pulled you from me.”
“BUT HE PAID THE PRICE.
AND I LIKE PETER ALMOST DENIED HIM THRICE.”

“Peter? Thrice?
What’s gotten into you?”
“I HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL THAT I HAD TO DO.”

“I’m waiting.
So please do tell.”
“I HAD TO LEAD SOMEONE AWAY FROM THE GATES OF HELL.”

“Whoa, now that’s heavy.
Now you’re saving souls, too?”
HE SIGHS, “THE SOUL I TRIED TO SAVE WAS YOU.”

“Me!
What are you talking about now?
You saved my soul, tell me when and how?”

“CLARIFICATION,
IT WASN’T JUST YOU.
WHILE I STOOD YOU UP, I TRIED TO SAVE MY SOUL TOO.”

“Please!
This is really crazy to me!”
“IT’S ONLY CRAZY BECAUSE YOU DO NOT SEE.

“WE WERE WRONG.
I KNEW BACK THEN.
BUT I LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN.”

“What, explain
Please once and for all.”
“YOU SEE I ASKED AND THE LORD ANSWERED MY CALL.

“HE DID IT FOR ME.
HE’LL DO IT FOR YOU.
HE’S DONE IT FOR HUNDREDS OF OTHER KIDS TOO.”

“The Lord?
He’ll do what for me?”
“HE’LL SAVE YOUR SOUL AND SET IT FREE.”

“I KNEW BETTER.
BUT I TURNED MY HEAD.
IT WAS TOO TEMPTING TO BE BAD INSTEAD.

“BUT NO MORE.
TWICE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR ME.
I ASKED HIM TO SET MY SOUL AND YOURS FREE.”

“Nice of you,
After all this time.
To turn goody-goody and drop a dime.”

“I DID NOT.
BUT WE’VE TOO MUCH TO LOSE.
BUT I’D DROP A DIME IF IT’S HIM YOU’D CHOOSE.”

“But why now?
And why in this way?
Couldn’t you have waited until another day?”

“HMM, LET ME SEE.
THE FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT.
BUT WHAT IF WE HAD NOT LIVED BEYOND OUR PROM NIGHT?

“THE TEMPTATION
IT WAS TOO STRONG YOU SEE.
I TURNED AWAY AND BEGGED HIM TO SET US FREE.

“BUT SOME THINGS
ONLY YOU CAN DO.
AND I PRAY YOU BEG HIM TO DO THE SAME FOR YOU.

“WE COULD LOSE
SO MUCH IN THE ACTIONS OF ONE NIGHT
BUT I WAS ABLE TO DO IT BY HIS GRACE, NOT BECAUSE OF FRIGHT.

“PLEASE ALLOW ONE LAST
CLARIFICATION FROM ME
I THANK HIM FOR NO PROM AND FOR SETTING ME FREE.”

Very original poem and idea the way he stood you up for Jesus.

Great poem. I liked the rhythm that you created and the dialogue between ht two characters. It makes a nice change for the man to be seeking for Jesus rather than the woman.
