The excitement of the first day of school is one that can only be compared to the first launch of a spaceship or the first satellite disk that was launched into space.

I remember getting ready to go to elementary school after the security of my mother's house was the scariest moment of my life. Yet, I walked down the hallway with all things new about myself. New clothes, new shoes, new book bag and a new attitude! Where I was the superstar on my turf (my mom's house); I am now being forced to mesh with other superstars as well. And they are not giving in without a fight! Almost like the star athlete in every state going to the same school! The meshing together was quite unique. Now, I understand the struggle of a caterpillar to a butterfly. The plight of an egg to a chicken or is it a chicken to an egg?

Well anyway here I am in a new world of independence. New things to learn - oops I left my book at home again. Tomorrow there will be new things to learn.

Books - Books
Rules - Rules
So goes my journey to elementary school.

It's month three now....
The new clothes are old
The new book bag is broken
The shoes are scuffed up and the new attitude went south!

My superstar status has severely diminished and now it is the surrival of the fittest. If my mama forgets to give me lunch money one more day - I will be forced to eat the bread and crackers. They give us that in order to say that they met all of the required food groups! Well, I've got to tell my mama because that lunch lady looks like she meant it this time. Rules - rules, that is my life in elementary school.

And the tranquility of my mother's home has been exchanged for

Stop it child - don't throw that ball
Quit your playing and running down the hall.

Did you hear that bell ring?
Why are you still out hear?

Maybe the principal can make the rules more clear.

You're not a baby - snap your own pants
Quit moving around like you slept in a bed of ants.

Books - books
Rules - Rules
So goes my journey to elementary school

I liked this because it's different and cleverly written. Thank you and God bless you.

Your analogies were great Cassandra. Good visuals of butterflies and chickens in their comparison to emerging youth from childhood experiences. Great description of school day concerns.
