She peered over the top of her notebook clutched tightly to her chest. The swell of bodies flowing in and out of the hallways intimidated her. Breathing deeply, she stepped out of the security the principal’s office provided and into the river of bodies.

Caught in the flow she occasionally glanced up at the others bobbing up and down beside her. One girl, adorned completely in black from her raven locks to her combat boot’s spit shine floated past her. A boy, wrapped in a letterman’s jacket yelled to four more jocks further ahead. Bouncing bubbly cheerleaders pressed in close to share a secret morsel of gossip. Three geeks squirreled by engrossed in a Trigonometry problem. Five boys weighted down by their gold jewelry and oversized pants “high-fived” each other as they passed. A few less colorful, more mundane students mixed into the current.

Everyone’s appearance designated the appropriate label their fellow classmates would assign them.

What about her?

When others looked at her would they see, “Radically Sold-Out Disciple of Jesus?”

Or had “Christian” simply become another label?

Nice vignette, Lissa. Wish it had been longer!
