The Boss is going fishing.
He has no rod or line
He doesn’t have some worms as bait
But things will work out fine
He out to catch a tiddler
That’s hiding on a ship
Jonah doesn’t know it yet
But he’s about to take a dip
The Boss has got a whale
That’s swimming in the sea
Jonah doesn’t know it yet
But he’s the whale’s tea.
Stormy weather’s coming
The ship’s tossed here and there
The sailors scared and frightened
Offer up a prayer
They soon find out it’s Jonah
The Boss is gunning for
There’s no way by rowing
They’ll safely reach the shore.
They’ve rowed right out of choices
And toss Joe over board
Mercy is a luxury
That they can ill afford
Jonah splashes down
And the storm ceases to blow
The sun shines oh so brightly
The wind and waves? - they go
The Boss’s whale approaches
And with a huge big slurp
Swallows up poor Jonah
Ending with a single burp
Now Jonah’s in for trouble
He thinks that he might die
He knows the Boss has put him there
And he knows the reason why
Enclosed in deepest darkness
Jonah prays, ”Hey Boss
I am sorry that I ran away
And that I made you cross
I know that I’ve been banished
And I’m hidden from your sight
I repent in dust and ashes
For I’ve surely seen the light
I will fulfil the vows
That I have made to you
Whatever task you give me
I will be sure to do.”
Now the whale gets indigestion
His belly is quite sore
He vomits out our Jonah
Upon the sandy shore
Jonah rants with passion
“God’s judgement’s on its way
If you don’t repent right now
You will be made to pay.”
They tear their coats and jackets
Put ashes on their head
The Boss’s heart is melted
Forgiveness comes instead
Many stories tell
Of the ones that got away
Jonah isn’t one of them
The Boss has had His way
All fishes have a tail
And tales have morals too
If you want to please the Boss
Do as He asks you to

LOL - I was giggling all the way through this one. The beauty of this poem is I can read it to my kids and they understand it, but my husband got a kick out of it too.

Also one of my top picks for the week!

Melanie, This was delightful. My kids enjoyed it as much as me, and you conveyed an important truth about obedience in a very fun way. Blessings! Mary

"Ending with a single burp"
Oh, that's a funny line!

What an innovative version of Jonah's tale. Love it. Please may I have your permission to include it in our Sunday School lesson sheet. We are covering the subject of obedience and did Jonah last week. I believe the children will very much enjoy your poem.

Blessings in His Name

I loved your poem. I would like to ask what were you trying to say in line 5 with "tiddler".
Melanie Kerr 06/16/04
The line should have read "He's out to catch a tiddler" - God's intention is to catch a small fish eg. Jonah. I didn't spot it unitl it was too late. Apologies! Thanks for people who said that they enjoyed reading it - I enjoyed writing it.

I enjoyed your poem. An old story but with a different perspective. I am sure it would appeal to children. God bless you in your writing.

what an awsome, creative poem. i just loved it!
Lynne Gaunt06/17/04
Oh this is wonderful! Funnily enough, my Bible reading plan had me read through Jonah just the other day - and it still never occurred to me as I was struggling to come up with a fishing story! I enjoyed this very much. I like to see spaces between lines here and there, but that's nothing against your poem. Well done!
Lynda Lee Schab 06/18/04
Very funny - very creative! I agree with it needing line breaks but other than that, great job! I had fun reading this one! Blessings!
