As the year breathes it last
Sighing as it succumbs to its successor
Inevitably the days of seasons past
Have run their course
From Spring of hope eternal
Bringing green signs of life and vitality
And April Showers that nourish
Blooming blossoms of Godís glorious floral creations
To autumn with its manifold harvest and ripe vegetables
And beautiful creatures born in stables
As Jesus was born in a manger, a babe in swaddling clothes
Truly a harvest with hope for all eternity
For the Fall of man warranted no other recourse but the coming
Of our savior Emmanuel

While Fall introduces the cold weather we escaped for a while
Indeed the seasons reflect human folly
As human nature fell throughout centuries past
So too winterís dropping temperatures must be weathered
Until we thaw again in spring
Yet winterís freezing days always seem to bring
Cold hearts filled with cold deeds
And frigid attitudes that knock some to their knees
Where they should be in the first place
So that they may seek Godís face
In praise, prayer and confession
That he may forgive our sins
For when winter ends
All the earth has a chance for growth again
As Jesus died and returned for us so that we may live
And the burden of our sins might be released
Like water dripping thru the holes of a sieve

So this new year may we look to our friends
And those who work our nerves till theyíre worn like split ends
And love them anyway with deeds instead of words
May we shed tears of joy with those who love us so
May we shed tears of compassion for those who bring us low
May forgiveness for them be the only thought that reigns
Down through our minds eye
As we reflect on the passing of another year
May we celebrate the hope of a new tear
