After many unsuccessful attempts to find temporary or permanent lodgings I was becoming increasingly frustrated. The phone rang at my friend’s house where I was spending the night and it was a Brookville friend calling to say she knew someone who knew someone who “might” be willing to rent me a room on a temporary basis. How “iffy” could it get!
I called this lady and later that day went to have our first face to face visit. And that’s how I came to meet my dear, sweet friend Norma Harriger, who has since gone home to heaven.
She took me in on a two-week trial basis and I stayed for six months till I moved into an apartment directly across the street from her! Norma and I grew on each other, overcoming our own pesky little quirks, and developing a relationship of love that filled a need for both of us. She was the grandma I never got to have and I was her “adopted” granddaughter.
In May of 2004 she was diagnosed with mesothelioma and she passed away one year later. In between, I was her boom companion. Every evening after work, I would go to spend the evening with her and she would leave the light on in her large front window as a signal that she was awaiting my arrival.
We laughed, we talked, we cried together and I was with her when she went home to be with the Lord.
There is no doubt in my mind that God brought us together and even now I can hear her telling me that her heart would break if I ever decided to leave.
Though my relationship with Norma was much too brief, its memory will be with me for a lifetime because that’s the way love is especially when it comes first as a gift from God.
