He re-lived their times together: The lilt of her voice, the sparkle as she described a beautiful sunset, the poetry of language as she spoke of butterflies dancing on the wind like painted messengers of God, the serenity that spread, like a gentle breeze over her face as she spoke of her Saviour. Though never touching, the world around them dissolved in each other's presence.
Yet both knew it could not continue. The ring on her finger and the vow it represented forbade it.
"I must go, Doreen. I've arranged a transfer to Cape Town."
"Yes, I know you must, Tony. It's the right thing."
How long had it been? Thirty years? Thirty years since that goodbye that tore open his heart and left his soul bleeding tears that would not stop for months. He had thought, since it was God's will, and there had been nothing physical, that the parting would be easy as pie. God would look after him. Yet he discovered that sometimes we need to express our love for Him in sacrifice that hurts and hurts. He tests our faithfulness, sometimes, to the limit.
Tony found that Doreen was etched indelibly on his heart. Though happily married years later to Susan, every now and then, on seeing a butterfly, like a bereaved parent mourning a lost child, he'd whisper, "A painted messenger from God."
It was five years since the cancer took Susan. Now here he was, looking at an advertisement for a bereavement seminar.
Doreen Chambers, who lost her husband two years ago will be giving her testimony.
If he hurried, he'd get there to hear her. His heart was fluttering. When he met her afterwards, what would it be like after all these years? Did she feel the same as him? Would it be awkward?
Or would God reward them for their obedience all those years ago? If so, it would be as easy as pie.

Even though you touched on the topic as easy as pie at the end, it didn't seem like an integral part of the story.
Great job of writing.
