Each volunteer’s time was carefully spent
A superior attitude took root and then grew
Polly wanted the spotlight on her, not the crew
Her inflated ego shouted “conceited”
They wanted to serve, no praises were needed
She took all credit as arrangements finished
Her self-importance, their worth diminished
The honoree’s heart was humble and pure
Former students shared fond stories of her
This teacher taught more than what was required
She lived life with grace--we observed, she inspired
She always had time to lend us an ear
With sound advice, her students she’d steer
That’s why today we can call her our friend
Applause punctuated each story’s end
Polly’s head hung in shame, realizing her pride
She asked forgiveness from those she denied
"Without your hands pitching in with the work
All would have failed--I’ve been a real jerk"
They pardoned her faults, their comments were kind
Her flaws were nevermore brought to mind
Then together they worked and cleaned up the hall
Thanking God for the mercy He gives when we fall
Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18 NLT
