With dewdrops clinging fast
upon its velvet petal tips
Like diamonds unsurpassed.
Yet in a moment they were gone;
All melted ‘neath my touch.
To keep their priceless beauty long
I would have given much.
I gripped the thorny stem I held;
Through pain I’d keep secure
This piece of heaven in my hand
With fragrant scent most pure.
Alas! For as I clutched the rose
It drooped in quick decay.
A sprightly breeze sprung up and snatched
Each withered shred away.
I flung aside the few remains;
In desperation cried,
“Is everything a fleeting breath?
Will nothing long abide . . . abide?”
And soon the echo also died.
The silence closed upon me
‘Til I finally spun around
To face a Book that called my name
Without a single sound.
I reached to touch the pages
That were lightly rimmed in gold;
My eyes glanced down to capture
The unfathomed tale it told.
Arrested by two unknown words
I stopped and shook my head.
Would I believe this faded page?
“Eternal God,” it read.
Could He exist without an end?
And what about a start?
The concept rocked my troubled mind,
But hope infused my heart.
Then words came leaping off the page;
I held my breath and stared.
“Eternal purpose, power, King,
Redemption,” they declared.
Through parted lips I whispered
Words that burned forth from my soul,
“Oh, I believe. Please grant me grace
And make me truly whole.”
“Eternal Gospel” called to me,
“Turn back from ways of strife.”
I bowed, called out, and then received
His gift – Eternal Life.
