Trees, once green, turn black,
The sun, in a half curtsey dips,
There is no going back.
The sky takes off her blue gown,
Slips on her evening gold,
Whilst white soft clouds, now dusky pink,
Survey a day grown old,
The ocean glistens brightly,
Beyond the bay of shale.
Anchors aweigh! Moorings release!
The ship will soon set sail.
Shadows of a memory
From distant years long passed
Recall the dawning of the day
Her moorings were first cast.
Her restless spirit, eager
To leave confines of land,
And surge the billowing mighty wave,
With Captain in command.
O how her hull did glisten,
The paint upon her bow
Gleamed brightly on the bobbing wave,
Yes, I remember how
Through storm or still of morning,
Through many-a noontide swell,
Through afternoons of journeying
She sailed the oceans well.
Discovery and adventure
High tides and stormy sea
She weathered well the briny deeps,
And then came back to me.
But now her day is drawing
With speed unto its end
And she will take her final voyage,
Farewell, well-travelled friend.
I watch her last departure
With misty salty tear
And see her slip, one final time,
And leave the jetty-pier.
More slowly now she tackles
The rising wave and spray,
More laboured is her progress
Than in her former day.
Shadows on the sand dunes,
Turn into darkened black,
The sun has passed now from my sight
There is no going back.
Her sails in the distance
Have receded from my view
Beyond the far horizon,
Beyond the midnight blue.
My grieving is arrested
And I catch, with listening ear,
A whisper from the ocean,
A faint and distant cheer.
I raise my arm in final salute,
Call sadly ‘There she goes’
And from an unseen far-off shore,
Upon the wave that blows,
I hear the cry of welcome,
Across the stormy blast,
Her day on earth has ended,
She’s reached her Home at last!
(This may be a tale of a craft on the sea
Or a parable-picture may unfolded be
With a deeper significance for you and for me.)
