"Naa, can't be right. Pastor Dave and Sue wouldn't break up. They's happy as pigs in mud."
"I didn't say broke up, but she sure left. Well, he done told me himself and I ain't making it up."
"We better get a prayer chain going."
"Yeah. I'm going home and tell Diane. She'll know what to do."
Joe left the cafe as Bill pulled his phone and hit speed dial. "Babe, listen I got some really bad news. Joe told me Sue's left Dave...... What?...... No, Joe said she just packed her bags, took the kids and went to her mum's place...... Ring some of the girls and get them praying, I'll go see if I can find Dave."
Sue dropped the phone and instantly picked it up again. "Hey, Jenny, have you heard about Dave and Sue?...... No? Well, there's been a big fight and Sue's taken the kids and gone home to her folks...... No, I'm not joking -- they had a hum-dinger of a quarrel and she's gone. Look, I'll ring Sally and you ring Jane, we need to get some prayer happening...... Okay, see you at the prayer meeting tomorrow night."
Jenny hung up and dialled. "Jane, I've got an urgent prayer request for you. Now don't go spreading it around but Pastor Dave and Sue have split up...... Well, apparently they had a big fight and, look I don't know for sure, but you know, push leads to shove and she wouldn't take it and left...... What?...... Oh, she took the kids with her...... Yeah, we all better get praying and hope it's not too late for God to save their marriage...... Tell George to start praying...... Yeah well, he'll need all the friends he can get now."
"Hey, George! I just had a phone call from Jenny and you are not going to believe this."
"What is it honey?"
"Apparently Pastor Dave got violent with Sue and started pushing her around. Anyway, she wouldn't take it, it got worse and he pushed her over -- she took the kids and left."
"No way, Jose. I don't believe it."
"Well you better."
"Here, give me that phone. I'll ring Dave myself."
But there was no answer, so George rang John instead.
"Hey, Johnno, listen we got some serious praying to do...... Hey? No, it's Sue and Dave...... What, you've heard already; bad news travels fast...... Yeah, seems like he lost it and clouted her...... Makes you wonder, hey?...... She don't have to put up with that and obviously don't intend to...... Interesting to see if he turns up tomorrow...... Yeah, I'm off to pray now, see ya there."
"Bruce, it's Johnno. Mate we got a drama going on...... Sue and Dave...... He must be on crack or something. Well, seems he lost control during a fight and gave her a touch up...... Yeah, hit her a beauty...... Well, 'course she just ups and goes...... Gone home to mum and ain't never coming back...... Needs a lot more than just prayer, man, they's in real trouble...... Okay, see ya tomorrow night."
"Hi, Sheila."
"Hello, Bruce, how's things?"
"Listen, has anybody told you about Dave and Sue?"
"No. You're the first call tonight. What's up?"
"Well, seems like Dave has been secretly drinking and doing drugs."
"Get out of here!"
"True as. She's left and is looking for a divorce."
"I don't believe it. Where's all this coming from?"
"Straight from the horse's mouth; Dave told Joe himself. Joe bumped into him coming out of a bar; he was tipsy and spilled the beans. Yeah, we'll see what happens tomorrow night at prayer. See ya there."
Pastor Dave was surprised at how many turned up to prayer the next night -- the place was packed and everyone was looking straight at him.
"Listen guys, we have an important prayer request tonight. Sue's mum, Anne, is seriously sick. So Sue has taken the kids over there for a few days to be with her mum and to try and help. Anne goes for a few tests tomorrow, so let's pray for a good report."
