There was no turning back.
It was just a finality of his decision one that he didn't regret making. He paced in front of the door, hands lifted high, surrendering finally to God's plan. He couldn't run any longer. His lies had finally caught up with him and he knew that there was only one way back to the Father. That door had to be sealed shut. For good.
He couldn't....no he wouldn't look back at the door. It was everything that his past represented. Bondage and slavery--the very thing he refused to return to. There was no need to be tempted by the temporary good feelings that he knew was behind the door.
The sloshing sound continued to fill the air and there was an urge to look back at the door. Slowly, as if drawn by invisible strings, his head started to turn to the side and his torso twisted to the right...
No. He couldn't give in now.
He jerked his body back around, setting his gaze in front of him, hands clenched into fists. This battle was agony...and he wanted to do this. Squeezing his eyes shut, he leaned back on his knees and tilted his head up before letting out a groan of pain and desperation. The urge to look back was almost too much. He couldn't keep living like this.
Weakly, he fell to his face, refusing to become a memorial to his own weakness and foolishness. He wasn't going to become another pillar of salt, looking back one last time at what was. He had to remain strong, but his strength wasn't enough.
He lifted his head heavenward and let out another groan. A word formed on his lips, the simplest of prayers. "Help."
Nothing changed. The pressure seemed to grow on him, gnawing now to look back and remember the good old times. He pressed his head back against the ground, his hands clawing into the dirt.
He could hear the brush dropping back into the pail of paint. The sound of a hammer and bits of iron clicking against each other filled the air, quickly followed by the sound of nails hammered into the door. Finally, all was quiet except for steady footsteps approaching him. Strong arms of The Carpenter lifted him to his feet and he felt two scarred hands grip his arms. He was guided to another door, one that promised to be a great adventure. All he had to do was step through it.
"Go. All is forgiven. Go on and explore the open door that I have for you and don't ever look back." The Carpenter propelled the man forward, towards the door before him. The young man stumbled and then hesitated on the threshold of the door before taking a deep breath and stepping into his newly found life.
The Carpenter smiled with pride at the choice His child made. The Carpenter turned back towards the painted and sealed door with a satisfied grin on His face. A scarlet cross smeared across the door, locking it permanently. His child would never again go through that door.

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:19 Amplified Bible (AMP)

It also reminds me of the struggle we all endure...Matthew 26:41
"... The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Great work!
Wonderful imagery. Very true words. Well done!
You made the point very well and I was reminded to always look for the forward facing door that the Lord always opens when He slams one shut behind us.
Good, creative writing.
