in the moonlit quiet, in the stillness of my prayers,
I can hear the faint and distant whistle of a far-off train approaching,
a beckoning to my yearning,
it calls to me as it comes to me,
coming near, ever nearer, until its sometime arriving here
to the station of my waiting soul,
it sounds once more in its mournful, fateful call,
reminding me,
relentlessly,
that is an appointment I must keep,
for a journey I must make,
to place I have never been, yet somehow have always known,
a hearkening to that holy possibility that so many cannot be,
yet I have heard that sound of rolling wheels upon miles of steel,
I have heard the coachman call,
“All aboard,†a call he makes for me.
in the moonlit quiet, in the stillness of my prayers,
I can catch the scent of the smoke of a distant, warming fire
ablaze upon a country hearth,
and with it, the evidence of loaves of barley bread, baking there,
in a cottage built of river stones and maple logs,
with deep and cozy quilts and blankets
kept in savory cedar chests.
And they all await me there
for my appointed hour,
with vanilla candles glowing in the amber-colored windows,
loved ones long departed, watching,
waiting,
listening for that faint and distant whistle coming nearer
in the moonlit quiet and in the stillness of their prayers.
