The lights dimmed
The first animal entered,
The singing started
And then the second animal entered
He was a large one,
Easily standing over six foot
His hunched back doing little
To detract his appearance
And BJ knew it.
He moved with grace and ease
Soaking up the waves
Of awe and wonder
Each step following his guide
Reenacting a story long seeped in BJ's heritage.
He was the heir of a tale,
Of a camel named Jonah
That was part of the famous caravan
That led the Magi of old
To the Christ-child.
Humans and animals alike
Stood in awe
Under the star's bright light
The still night gave way
To the humble Child's cry
The Child was brought out,
For the entire caravan to see.
And in that moment the world fell silent
As animal and human alike
Gazed upon the Child
Oh! The wonder in the moment,
Jonah could not hold in the rapture!
He lowered his long neck
Bowing his head and knee
To the King of all.
From generation to generation
The tale was told
Reminding each young camel
Of the miracle
Their forefather had seen
BJ continued on his pre-plotted course
Never once stopping
Eager for the praise that surely was his
That is, until that night
He glanced at the Reenactment to his side
And something inside of him sprung to life
The tale that had become a legend--
Suddenly became real!
Oh, the wonder! Oh, the astonishment
How could he have missed this!
In all of his years of being part of this
How could he had not seen
That this was the reason for the big scenes
He had to keep walking,
Following his predestined course.
But, he paused,
BJ couldn't just walk away
This was his moment in time
To take his stand.
The music around him swelled
And he felt like he was looking through
His grandfather's eyes
As he paused for a moment,
Gazing at the Reenactment intently
Before bowing his head and heart
Submitting whole-heartedly
To the King of all.
His guide tugged at his reins
Breaking the spell and
Encouraging him forward
BJ gazed at his guide
And there was a moment
A sacred understanding
Of what just happened
One that neither man nor beast would forget.
So, he plodded forward,
No longer hearing
The mutters and gasps of amazement
But instead, hearing something more
Something he could not wait to hear again
The low groan of approval
Of Jonah the Camel
Echoing across the generations
Proud of his lineage
And all that will be.

This poem is based on real life events that the author witnessed during a Christmas production. During the production, every night the camel made his way through the auditorium would pause and look at the Nativity and the final night, he paused and bowed his head.
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD. Psalms 150:6

I liked the part about how he had to keep plodding along to reach his destiny. And also how the camels are truly special to the Lord too, as all His creation is.
God Bless you~
