Anonymity was her best weapon of survival. She hoped that the staff assumed she was a starving college student or even author who was looking for a cheap cup of cocoa. But in reality, she was busy editing and a podcast that she had recorded last night. The file itself wasn't the best; she had spent the early morning hours recording it in the privacy of her car.
The server came around and Megan quickly closed the window that she was working in and smiled at the young man. Wordlessly he refilled her hot cocoa and went to check on his other customers. Sometimes she wondered how much they really knew of what she was doing.
The door opened again, and Megan peered over the monitor. She felt a shiver chase its way down her spine and settle heavily in her stomach. She immediately recognized the elder of the two as Captain Severns. He had arrested Megan less than a month ago on accusations similar crime.
She quickly struck a few keys, and started the uploading process. Her time was limited and she knew it. Megan had one chance to get this uploaded. She hid her face deeper into the hood as she tapped her fingers impatiently on the table, her cocoa now forgotten. She found herself sitting on her hands to keep from motioning for the machine to move faster. The circle spun; as with each passing second the owners of carefully polished boots moved closer.
The circle stopped and Megan's eyes moved to the message box. She had been having problems the past couple of days uploading to the encouragement board's server. Her dark eyes scanned the message as a slow grin crossed her face. It was there.. and safe.
She made a few quick key strokes, deleting the file from her desktop and then again from her recycle bin as the officials moved closer. It didn't matter now; the upload was a complete success. She leaned back in the chair and picked up her now cold cocoa and took a sip. She casually closed the lid of her laptop, praying that they had missed her frantic pounding and tapping at the keyboard but as they continued their steady pace towards her, Megan knew that they hadn't. She looked around, praying that the server was somewhere nearby. He was, but was preoccupied with some other customers.
Captain Severns sat down at the same table and Megan shifted, "Can I help you Captain?" She stated keeping her voice carefully neutral. The captain offered her a cruel smile that never seemed to reach his eyes. Megan fought another shiver as he started to speak.
"Miss Doe, I didn't think we'd be meeting again this soon after our last meeting." His voice was icy as ever and Megan almost checked to see if her cocoa had turned to ice.
Megan shrugged, "I don't recall asking to meet up with you again this soon. So, what did I do to deserve this special unannounced visit?"
The captain's smirk grew wider and tapped Megan's laptop. Before stating, "Just here to make sure you haven't been up loading any other contraband material is all."
Megan felt her heart start to pound wildly in her chest. She was as good as arrested, but she had to play it cool. After all, she had already deleted the evidence.
"Yeah, sure, take it Captain you won't find anything though, I've been a model citizen since our last visit."
"We'll see about that, Miss Doe." The captain stated, standing and picking up her laptop in one fluid motion. "I will be in contact with you in a few days. And if there is even a hint of any contraband material, you will be arrested."
Megan nodded. She watched wordlessly as Captain Severns left, waving his companion out. She remained motionless for several minutes before making her decision. It was time to move north and continue her work somewhere else.
